“Cyber is more consequential” wise and clear words from NCSC CEO Richard Horne at #SICW25 and @UKinSingapore breakfast, kindly hosted and sponsored by #ReverseC.
We all know this - the question is - what are we doing about it?
Intrigued?
Remotely curious?
Many are, but few have the guts to actually find out.
If only some had done this before they were hacked, they may have saved their businesses from huge financial and reputational loss, and the brink of ruin.
Do you have the courage to take your business risk seriously?

Trust is powerful. It’s also exploitable.
Fictional company, Snakeoil, was in the middle of a high-profile merger. Success depended on the timely delivery of a new product from a critical production partner.
So when the CEO received a video call request from the partner’s CEO, it felt natural. After all, trust had been built between the two companies. But all was not what it appeared to be...here's what happened:
👩💼 An employee at the partner gave their credentials to someone posing as the company's IT provider.
🗒️ Those credentials were used to access the email server.
🦹 A spoof CEO account was created and used to set up the call.
🔪 The fraudster cloned the CEO’s voice with AI and created a deepfake avatar.
On screen, Snakeoil’s CEO saw a familiar face and heard a trusted voice. The pressure was high, the request urgent — and that’s how the trap was sprung.
Deepfakes work because they exploit the trust that exists between people.
The telltale signs that all is not right may be subtle, but they’re there. Urgency is always one of them.
👉 The lesson for leaders:
✅ Trust is essential, but it can’t go unquestioned.
⛔ Verification must become second nature.
🛠️ Equip your people to recognise when trust is being manipulated.
👀 Don’t trust blindly. Verify deliberately.

🗣️ A casual pub chat.
👂 A shady eavesdropper listening in.
🕸️ Sensitive information leaked to the dark web.
🤑 A competitor capitalising on the intel.
🙇 Bankruptcy. 100s of jobs lost.
Technology alone won’t protect your business. People will.
👉 Training, awareness, and strong behavioural risk controls are just as critical as firewalls and compliance checklists.
Because if your people don’t understand the risks, you’re leaving the door wide open.
Corporate espionage 101...
Loose lips sink ships. And sometimes… entire companies.
The CEO, at fictional DripCo Inc, was focused on budgets, returns, regulations, and competitors. But one thing got pushed to the "next quarter” ➡️ behavioural risk management.
That decision, and the following chain of events, are not far-fetched:

Six new ways to prove — not guess — your security posture.
Traditional vulnerability management relies on assumptions. With these six new NodeZero capabilities, we’re redefining Risk-Based Vulnerability Management to show what’s actually really exploitable.
The recent M&S breach wasn’t caused by a zero-day exploit.
It was caused by human behaviour.
Which raises the question:
👉 Did M&S really prepare their staff and supply chain for the risk of human compromise?
Too many “solutions” only act at the point of failure—when it’s already too late.
That’s like handing someone a fire extinguisher after they’ve started the fire.
Behavioural risk is the biggest threat to organisational security today.
And the only real answer is shifting prevention left.
I’ve unpacked why in my latest piece:
👉 Waiting for the fire to start: Why behavioural risk management needs to shift left

Most cyber risks don’t start with technology — they start with people.
Over 90% of breaches involve a human factor. Read our blog 'why understanding your organisation’s Risk Readiness is critical'.
