as far as i can tell "banned books" is an example of genuinely divergent usage. to me it seems weird to call a book "banned" if you can buy it on amazon, discuss it freely, write about it online, etc. but librarians and teachers will look at you like you're insane if you try to tell them that removing a book from a school or a library for content reasons is not the same thing as "banning" the book.
