Today we spotlight Dal Maxvill, who is shown in this wonderful wire photo with one of his sons, Danny.
"Maxie" was one of the most important defensive shortstops in St. Louis Cardinals history, a steady, glove‑first infielder, who helped anchor multiple championship teams.
He wasn’t a flashy hitter, but he was the kind of player championship clubs are built on, especially in the 1960s.
He was born on February 18, 1939, in Granite City, Illinois, just across the river from St. Louis, and grew up a Cardinals fan, and eventually lived out the dream of playing for his hometown team.
Maxie debuted with the Cardinals on June 10, 1962 playing in a doubleheader against the Giants at Busch Stadium 1.
He spent the bulk of his career in St. Louis (1962–1972)
Career Highlights include:
He played on 5 World Series teams and won 4 World Series Championships:
1964 (Cardinals)
1967 (Cardinals)
1972 (A's)
1974 (A’s)
1968 Gold Glove Award - recognizing him as the best defensive shortstop in the National League that season.
Maxie played his final game on September 28, 1975 to end his 14-year MLB career.
He would transition to become the Cardinals General Manager in February of 1985 and hold that position until 1994.
He later returned to run the front office, guiding the club to a 1987 NL pennant.
Men like Dal Maxvill may not carry Hall of Fame credentials, but they were invaluable, as 4 World Series rings will attest to.

@AugieNash The answer is no. 2011 was perfect, but the only one I’d consider here is 2012. Definitely not 2019. 2014 just felt like it was missing something. The 2012 team was so damn good though.
This is the way to mention the attendance situation from a national figure, by the way (and obviously a figure with strong STL ties).
Brings up what has to happen to get it back, putting the onus on the org to do the building rather than heaping blame on the fans for the image.
@KareemSSN Starting outfielder, no. Starting lineup, yes. Jordan, Burly, and Herrera should alternate days at DH in my opinion. Trade Noot for some pitching help.
NEWS: 5⭐️ Jason Crowe Jr. has committed to Missouri, source told @Rivals. He’s the program’s second-highest ranked recruit ever — only behind Michael Porter Jr.
The 6-3 guard and top-10 player chose the Tigers over Kentucky, USC, others.
Monumental pickup for Dennis Gates.
