In 1991, two hikers in the Alps found a body emerging from the ice. They assumed it was a lost mountaineer. So did the authorities, who tried to free it with ice axes.
But then an archaeologist examined the axe found beside him. Its blade was copper.
The 'climber' had died 5,300 years ago. Before the Great Pyramid. Before Stonehenge.
He had 61 tattoos, the remains of ibex, red deer and einkorn wheat in his stomach, and a flint arrowhead buried deep in his left shoulder.
Someone had shot him from behind, high in the Alps. And the ice preserved the evidence for more than five millennia.
We now know an extraordinary amount about Ötzi. But we still cannot answer who wanted him dead?
