China Forges a Global Power Empire to Fuel the AI Revolution
As the world braces for a future dominated by artificial intelligence, a critical bottleneck is emerging: a severe shortage of electrical power. By 2026, the global AI infrastructure is projected to face significant power deficits. In the United States, this challenge is already stark, with data centers facing massive power gaps and critical components like transformers having delivery times stretching up to five years. In sharp contrast, China is aggressively positioning itself to become the world's first true "power kingdom," executing a monumental strategy to not only meet its own needs but also dominate the future of energy.
Unprecedented Investment and Scale
China's ambition is backed by staggering financial commitment and engineering prowess. The nation's total electricity consumption is on track to exceed 10 trillion kilowatt-hours by 2025. To manage this demand, State Grid and China Southern Power Grid are planning a colossal investment of nearly 5 trillion yuan (approximately $700 billion) as part of the 15th Five-Year Plan. This investment is building out the world's largest power grid, underpinned by 46 ultra-high-voltage (UHV) transmission lines that efficiently move electricity across vast distances.
A Green Energy Superpower
A cornerstone of China's strategy is a rapid and large-scale transition to renewable energy. By March 2026, renewables are expected to account for over 60% of the country's total installed power capacity. With its global leadership in wind and solar energy production, China is constructing a massive green energy foundation.
To overcome the inherent volatility of renewables, the country is scaling up advanced energy storage solutions. By integrating pumped-hydro storage and creating sophisticated virtual power plants, China can stabilize its grid at merely one-tenth the cost of regulation compared to traditional thermal power. This ensures a consistent and reliable power supply, crucial for sensitive operations like data centers and advanced manufacturing.
A Fully Integrated Smart Grid
China's vision extends beyond mere generation to intelligent management. The government has formally integrated "power-computing coordination" into its national work report. This policy encourages data centers and a growing fleet of electric vehicles (EVs) to participate directly in grid regulation. By integrating computing and power, the grid becomes a dynamic, responsive system capable of balancing supply and demand in real-time.
This reliable and increasingly affordable green energy is creating a powerful economic advantage. China's exports of power equipment are surging, and the country is becoming a magnet for energy-intensive industries. While foreign firms in other regions may struggle with power access and costs, China's stable grid is becoming its core competitive edge in the global race for AI and advanced manufacturing supremacy. While challenges in renewable absorption and cross-regional coordination remain, China's sustained, long-term investment is setting it on a course to power the next industrial revolution.
This is day 17th of our Xinjiang RV roadtrip and we're still in Nalati (那拉提), where we arrived yesterday, a place known as the "grassland in the sky" because you need to climb all the way up the mountain to reach it.
We climbed the mountain with a cable car, which is actually the longest in Xinjiang: 4.5km long.
Interestingly, and this is something even many Chinese people don't know (tourists know this place mostly as a summer destination): this place is now a sky station during winter, it recently opened as a sky station in 2023, with 11 slopes.
The ski passes prices are extremely affordable: 150RMB a day (about $20) for adults, and 75RMB for teenagers. Amazingly cheap to ski in such a beautiful place!
It gives us a reason to come back to Xinjiang in the winter 😊
