Never to be forgotten, the iconic actress, model, and occasional singer Marilyn Monroe (June 1, 1926 – August 4, 1962) was born on this date. She was a fan of jazz and frequented New York nightclubs and grew to love this music. However, she was troubled that most jazz performers were black and could not perform in white only clubs.
Monroe stated, “Well, my very favorite person and I love her as a person as well as a singer. I think she’s the greatest and that’s Ella Fitzgerald.” When asked about her famous actress friend, Fitzgerald responded that she owed a great debt to Monroe.
Ella Fitzgerald was not allowed to play the Mocambo because of her race. Marilyn Monroe called the owner of the Mocambo and told him if he would book her, she would take a front table every night. “After that, I never had to play a small jazz club again.” - EllaFitzgerald
