A 13 year old boy was pushed beyond human strength in the open sea, and when his family survived, he gave the glory straight to God.

Austin Appelbee is being praised as a hero after swimming for about four hours through rough waters off Western Australia to get help for his mother and younger siblings. The family had been out near Quindalup and Dunsborough when strong wind and rough conditions pushed them far from shore. Their kayak and paddleboards became difficult to control, and as the danger grew, Austin’s mother made the terrifying decision to send her son toward land to find help.

Austin battled the cold sea, waves, fear, exhaustion, and even removed his life jacket at one point because it was slowing him down. He swam around four kilometers, using different strokes just to keep moving, even though he had reportedly never swum anywhere near that distance before. After finally reaching shore, he still had to run for help while his mother and two siblings remained stranded far out at sea.

Rescuers later found the family after they had drifted many miles offshore, cold and exhausted but alive. The family was treated for hypothermia and shock, but the ending could have been far worse without Austin’s courage.

When people called him a hero, Austin pointed away from himself and toward God. He said, “I don’t think it was me who did it, it was God the whole time,” adding that he kept praying during the terrifying swim.

For many believers, his story is more than bravery. It is a testimony of faith under pressure, a reminder that even in the darkest waters, prayer can become strength, and God can carry someone when their body has nothing left.
