🚨🇨🇳China closer than anyone to unlocking Big Bang mystery
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) has delivered a major leap forward in the global race to decode the elusive particles that could reveal how the universe evolved.
🔶 Seven hundred meters underground, JUNO uses a giant acrylic sphere filled with 20,000 tons of liquid scintillator and 43,183 custom Chinese phototubes
🔶 It detects “ghost” neutrinos from nearby reactors as they travel near light speed
🔶 The detector has already cut uncertainties in two key neutrino oscillation parameters by ~40% after less than two months of operation
The findings could explain how stars explode and create the elements needed for life — while providing critical data that will shape the next generation of particle physics experiments worldwide.
Rivals in the US and Japan are pursuing the same goal, but are still years from full operation.
The same side of the Moon always faces Earth, but not in exactly the same way. Due to its tilted axis and elliptical orbit, we see about 59% of its surface over time. This computer simulation compresses a year into 60 seconds, making the Moon's wobble, called libration, visible.
