After reading the bill, it seems these changes are bringing FL family law out the 1950s and into the modern age in line with other states.

Some states require a minimum time for the marriage before spousal support can be considered. Most, now, set limits on duration and many impose a burden of proof for the need.

To put it another way, a couple married less than two years would not qualify at all. A couple married ten or more years, if the wife has an equal status and income as her husband, would not qualify.

A couple married ten years where husband stayed home to tend the kids, and followed his wife in support of her career, he would qualify for spousal support, for a duration of time necessary to renew licenses, certifications, and establish a stable income, so long as that does not exceed ten years.

A couple married ten years where there is no disparity in their employment or income, where the wife gets custody of the kids, would not qualify for spousal support. Child support being the mechanism of correcting the disparity in caring for the kids.

This is a general example of how these laws work, not a specific set of examples exclusive to FL law, and application of FL law will likely differ from these examples.

White cop Kirk Keffer drove through an industrial area. He saw a Black teen in a hoodie, walking. "You knew it wasn't right," he said.

Jourdan Duncan was in the hoodie. "I thought, 'I'm not gonna move. I don't want him to think I have any weapons.'"

Jourdan told Officer Keffer he was just walking home from work. Many cops would've just left the kid alone from there. But that didn't feel right to Officer Keffer... He gave Jourdan a ride home.

On the way, Officer Keffer asked, "How far away is work?"

The answer shocked him.

"Seven miles," Jourdan said. It was a two and a half hour commute that Jourdan walked, every day.

Jourdan's car had broken down months earlier, and he had too much pride to ask for help.

Afterward, Officer Keffer couldn't stop thinking about Jourdan's struggle, and his strong work ethic. He told the police officer's union about it. They made a decision.

A few days later, Officer Keffer caught up to Jourdan. The teen looked at the officer, wondering what was up this time. "You're not in trouble," the cop said.

"We just want to give you something to ease his commute."

He gave Jourdan a lifeline – a new bike.

The whole police union had pitched in. Jourdan was overwhelmed with gratitude.
