SPORTS ATHLETE FEATURE ARTICLE: TRIBUTE TO WEST BRIDGEWATER HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR – GRACE POLEN
Grace Polen, a senior at West Bridgewater High School located in West Bridgewater, MA has been a captain and three sport varsity athlete in field hockey, basketball and tennis. Grace, known by her coaches and teammates as the ultimate teammate and leader, capped a brilliant career with her hard work ethic, competitiveness, determination, dedication and leadership skills as a valuable athlete in many ways at West Bridgewater High School. After graduation from West Bridgewater High School, Grace is planning to attend the University of Connecticut to further her education.
This special article to tribute Grace Polen includes interviews and statements from Grace Polen, her coaches Bill Flynn and Steve Reddington as well as her parents Laurie and Scott Polen.
WEST BRIDGEWATER NEWS: How did you decide to play 3 different sports in high school and what made you select Field Hockey, Basketball and tennis compared to the many other sports offered?
GRACE POLEN: I began playing basketball at a very young age and decided that I wanted to continue in high school. Similarly, for field hockey, I began playing in fourth grade due to a neighbor who played. However, for tennis, I began playing my junior year because I was looking for something fun and new and I have always wanted to try it. Playing 3 sports is very difficult and I think without the support and memories from teammates, friends, and coaches I would not have been able to do it!
WEST BRIDGEWATER NEWS: What are some of your memorable times in field hockey?
GRACE POLEN: One of my most memorable times in field hockey was my very first goal in fifth grade! I was ecstatic that I finally scored a goal thanks to the help of my wonderful older peer's teammates. Additionally, during my past 6 years on the WB team, I have found that my most memorable experiences have been made with friends; after we fought through a tough game, laughing at pasta parties, or enjoying our time at practice.
WEST BRIDGEWATER NEWS: What are some of your memorable times in Basketball?
GRACE POLEN: Some of my favorite memories from basketball come from exciting crowds and cheering during the games. For example, my senior year we had stands full of cheering students which truly made it an unforgettable experience. I also love my memories with the team as well as the coaches joking around at practice or on the bus.
WEST BRIDGEWATER NEWS: What are some of your memorable times at tennis?
GRACE POLEN: One of my most memorable moments at tennis was my very first win. From only playing tennis from that season, pulling out a win towards the end truly felt like a dream to me. I was so excited at how far I had come and everything I had accomplished. Some of my very favorite memories have come from laughing with Coach Reddington and with the team.
WEST BRIDGEWATER NEWS: What other sports or activities did you participate in while at West Bridgewater?
GRACE POLEN: The only other sport I participated in was outdoor track and field one year in which I earned a varsity letter while competing in the high jump and hurdle events. Although I enjoyed it, I am glad I decided to play tennis. Outside of school I participate in dance once a week where we work towards performing for recital. Additionally, I enjoy running and doing yoga, and currently I am working on becoming a certified yoga teacher.
WEST BRIDGEWATER NEWS: What was your favorite sport you played as an athlete and why?
GRACE POLEN: Field Hockey has always been my favorite sport to play. I found the team aspect and the quicker pace of the game to be exciting. However, I would say that now, tennis is my favorite sport to play as an individual. I would not give up the memories and lessons I have learned from it for anything!
WEST BRIDGEWATER NEWS: Do you have any people you would like to give shoutouts to?
GRACE POLEN: My parents Laurie and Scott Polen for their care, dedication, love and unconditional support. I would like to mention my wonderful co-captains this year as a Senior, Abby Matta, Ava O’Neil, Elayna Jenkinson, and Amelia Chew. I could not have done it without you all. All of them truly made it a fun and exciting experience. I would also like to mention my athletic coaches over the years, Bill Flynn, Nick Campagna, Kelsey Francesshelli, Steve Reddington, and Tim Doherty, thank you for all the valuable lessons, your dedication, time and encouragement you provided for me as it was greatly appreciated!
WEST BRIDGEWATER NEWS: What are your plans after graduation from West Bridgewater High School in 2025?
GRACE POLEN: After I graduate, I plan to continue my education at the University of Connecticut where I plan to major in statistics and minor in economics with a hope to pursue an actuarial career. Sports wise, I plan to play club field hockey, go to many basketball games and continue playing other sports for fun.
STATEMENT FROM COACH BILL FLYNN – FIELD HOCKEY. Grace is the ultimate teammate. The care she shows for teammates shines through her excellent leadership.
STATEMENT FROM COACH STEVE REDDINGTON – BASKETBALL AND TENNIS:
I’ve had the pleasure of coaching Grace for 2 seasons, and she has made such a positive impact on both programs! Coming back to basketball after a season sitting out and picking it back up was amazing! She also started playing tennis last year as a junior and quickly rose through the ladder. But it has to do with how hard she works! She is a great example of how to be a great teammate and a great person!
WEST BRIDGEWATER NEWS: Please say anything you want about Grace’s athletic career and her in general, including memorable times, highlights and how it impacted you as well as made you feel as parent's
LAURIE AND SCOTT POLEN – PARENTS: (Laurie speaking for Scott and herself) Her dad and I have enjoyed watching Grace compete on the field or courts from a very young age. I was thrilled when she gave field hockey a try in fourth grade, as I played in high school myself. Grace has an innate sense of where to be on the field. We loved watching her play fierce defense when she first started out. It was so exciting to see her drive the ball down the field or stop a play. She made wonderful friends on the field and was able to play senior year with 6 of them. For basketball and tennis, it’s fun to watch how high she jumps for rebounds or for the tip off. Before high school, she played on a private team with the same teammates for years. They learned the game together and became a strong force. We have great memories hosting pasta parties and building team spirit. My favorite memory is her buzzer beater in sophomore year as that was the team’s first win of the season. It does not surprise us that she has also done well in tennis. She has worked hard to learn the sport and be competitive. More importantly, we are most proud of the fact that she displays good sportsmanship, respect for her coaches and referees, team spirit, and a willingness to give it her all. We will miss cheering her on from the sidelines.
