Dear Muslims,

The recent Court of Appeal judgement on the International School Ibadan hijab saga is a temporary setback. But it brings up very critical questions that we must ask with our full chests.

The appellate court based its ruling on the claim that the Supreme Court judgement on public schools does not apply because ISI is a "private institution."

We need unassailable evidence for this claim. We are demanding answers. When did ISI become a private or faith based school?

The University of Ibadan is a federal and secular university funded by taxpayers. How does a secondary school birthed, owned, and sitting on the soil of a federal university suddenly transform into a private enterprise because they want to enforce a hijab ban? Where is the constitution that says ISI is a religious school?

If they claim it is private, they must prove it loudly and clearly. You cannot claim private autonomy just to justify religious intolerance and deny young girls their fundamental rights.

So, what should Muslims do in these trying times? How do we navigate this while the lawyers take the battle to the Supreme Court?

To the parents, this is the hard truth. Do not subject your daughters to the daily trauma of stripping off their hijabs at the school gate. Do not let them face hostile security personnel just to enter a classroom.

Being denied entry just as we see it in the video is a clear injustice, however, it is not a life or death situation. There is no Islamic justification to compromise here because there are hundreds of other good schools in Oyo State. You do not drop a direct divine commandment from Allah because you want to maintain the prestige of wearing an ISI uniform.

The most grounded and honorable thing to do right now is to pull your children out. Protect their mental health and their Islamic identity. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) made it clear that whoever leaves something for the sake of Allah, Allah will replace it with something far better.

Let MURIC and MPAC handle the legal warfare at the Supreme Court to set the record straight for future generations. But on the ground, preserve your dignity. We will not beg for our rights. Very soon, victory will be ours again.
