It’s official! The Redistricting Commission voted to finalize a map keeping BIPOC renter and low-income communities empowered across Seattle.

You all helped power our fight. *93%* of the final map (left) mirrors our RJS map (right) we submitted in July. When we organize, we win!

The decision could be in days or months, but before March '24.

We're cautiously optimistic. The evidence is on our side; the judge in the more liberal Western WA district; but opposition will argue recent voting trends show Latinos aren't "politically cohesive", as VRA requires

In 2021, @WARedistricting Commission broke the VRA by gerrymandering Latinos apart.

On Monday June 5, the Voting Rights Act trial for a Latino-opportunity LD in Central WA will begin.

If successful, a new statewide LD map would be drawn so Latinos can elect reps they support.

The Court will also hear a 2nd case from the other side that claims:
(1) Latinos are NOT protected by the VRA
(2) WA illegally gerrymandered to give too much power to Latinos (in legalese: used race as a predominant factor in redistricting without VRA allowance).

Commissioner Nickels was the only dissenting vote, who voted against the map solely citing the Magnolia split despite voting for a similar map in August.
