🇮🇪 €29,000 FOR A ST PATRICK’S DAY TRIP, INCLUDING A PRIVATE-POOL SUITE

At a time when ordinary households are being told to watch every euro, questions are being raised over the cost of Minister Jack Chambers’ St Patrick’s Day trip to Senegal and Nigeria.

According to figures obtained by the Irish Examiner under Freedom of Information, the four-person delegation cost the taxpayer more than €29,000.

More than €13,000 was spent on flights, while around €6,400 was spent on four nights at two hotels in Nigeria**.

But one detail is particularly eye-catching.

Chambers reportedly spent one night in a double suite with its own private pool, costing just over €300 for the night, roughly twice the price of rooms occupied by members of his entourage.

The Government sends ministers around the world every St Patrick’s Day to promote Ireland, build diplomatic relationships and encourage trade. There can be genuine value in that.

The question is whether €29,000 for a four-person delegation represents value for taxpayers’ money.

When families are struggling with housing costs, food bills and energy prices, people are entitled to scrutinise every euro spent on ministerial travel.

I’ve seen both Cormac Lucey and now David McWilliams warn this week that bad news is coming for the Irish economy from the US.

At this stage, I welcome it.

Irish people are not benefiting from the massive amounts of corporation tax pouring into the State.

Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil are burning through it with no thought for the future and wasting it on everyone but the Irish.

Ireland isn't improving. Immigration, housing, healthcare, social cohesion. and infrastructure are all getting worse.

I'd accept a long, hard recession now to salvage what's left of Ireland. Because if we keep going like this, Irish people risk becoming a minority in a country plagued by housing, infrastructure and sectarian and culturally incompatible tensions between the native Irish and the "new Irish", many of who are culturally incompatible.

Economies can recover in time.

Demographic destruction is different. Once a population is fundamentally transformed, you cannot simply reverse it.
