Rapid Fire, an underrated action movie and a rising star.

After Rapid Fire became a hit in 1992, Fox bought Jonathan Hensleigh’s script Simo.n Says i. 1993. Variety reported on it and called it a city thriller with a white cop and a civilian black activist racing around Manhattan to stop a bomber. Robert Lawrence, who produced Rapid Fire, was attached, and Brandon Lee was the obvious lead Fox was building with a rising star.

After Lee’s tragic death, the script stayed at Fox. Warner and Joel Silver looked at it for Lethal Weapon 4 but did not buy it.
Fox then reworked it into Die Hard with a Vengeance.

Hensleigh has said the first half is essentially Simon Says. The Federal Reserve heist and the Hans Gruber revenge plot were added later. The civilian partner, originally written as a woman, became Zeus Carver.
