It was the $500 billion of fiber optic cable buried between cities while every house in America was still on dial-up

First Ever Graviton Detector to be Built in the USA
Physicists at Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey and Yale University have teamed up to build the world’s first detector that has a reasonable chance to detect gravitons, the hypothetical quanta of gravity.
The experiment would entail cooling a centimetre-sized drop of superfluid helium so much that the tiny bumps from gravitons could cause a measurable resonance. If successful, this experiment would establish that gravity really has quantum properties, settling a 90 years old debate, and without doubt winning a Nobel Prize. The plan has been supported with $1.3 million from the Keck foundation.
I honestly didn’t expect this idea to move towards realization that quickly.
