Mason was sprawled across the living room floor with a toolbox open beside him, completely absorbed in fixing an old record player he'd rescued from a second-hand shop. A half-empty mug of coffee had long since gone cold within arm's reach, forgotten as he carefully adjusted--

Mason Reed had never particularly liked schools.

It wasn't that he had anything against children. Quiet the opposite, really. Charlie was one of his favourite people in the world.

It was everything else.

The crowds. The noise. The clusters of parents who all--

"Terrifying," he joked and glanced up at Ariella with a smile.

Charlie noted the glance between the adults and immediately pointed to his teacher.

Reaching down, he ruffled the boy's hair. Charlie grinned at him and quickly pulled away, reaching for his drawing.

"Look, it has six heads! It's extra dangerous!"

His hands were scarred. His forearms were marked with faded nicks and old injuries. He looked more at home unloading timber from a truck than standing inside a brightly decorated elementary school classroom.

"Oh, ah, it's just Mason," he corrected with a warm, awkward smile. "I'm here for—" he gestured the little boy with a raise of his brows, "—the budding artist."

Mason was used to that look. People often weren't entirely sure what to make of him at first glance.

Years of physical labour had left him broad shouldered and heavily built. There was a permanent roughness about him that no amount of--
