It’s nearly impossible to assess people’s true motivations. But I’ve learnt the hard way not to trust people who are:
- very friendly and “nice” at the outset
- quick to invoke God and religion
In my experience, the two archetypes above are almost always up to no good.
Most people think about what they want to achieve. Fewer think about who they need to become to achieve it. The becoming is the actual question. The achievement follows from it. Most people try to produce the result while staying the same person. It usually doesn't work.
The African continent doesn’t need more entrepreneurs. It’s full of them.
What it needs is a specific class of entrepreneurs called industrialists: business people who build value-adding firms in export-oriented job creating sectors, not rent capture.
Norwegian fund manager: what will be your legacy Mr. Dangote?
Dangote: my legacy would be I am the one that actually pioneered the industrialisation of Africa
it is an unwritten rule of life that after every prolonged period of hardship and uncertainty, there is going to be a period when you are going to achieve quantum leaps across multiple areas of your life. the only requirement is that you do not give up on yourself
If you’re ambitious I’d highly recommend working in an organization or a team where people have your similar sense of urgency or you will slowly go insane
Make your boss’s life easier. Learn how to summarize information clearly. Before escalating a problem, think of a solution. No matter your role, always understand the commercials; there is a reason sales/marketing guys often rise faster.
Leadership is the discipline of discernment.
The wisdom to know when to invest in individual growth, and/or when to uphold the standard.
Train for potential.
Make tough choices.
Act to uphold excellence.

I don't agree though. Scale in three key points is:
a. Revenue grows faster than costs.
If your revenue grows while costs stay constant or reduces, that's scale. If both increases, that's just "growing".
b. Systems handle more customers without breaking. Which simply means if your tech, processes, and teams can serve more customers without breaking.
c. The business model is repeatable. You already know who your customer is, how to acquire them, and how to deliver value consistently. On repeat!
Paystack is scaled. Dangote is (spread cost that eventually reduces unit cost).
Interestingly Jumia, Chowdeck and Domino Pizza are not scaled. Yet, geographically, they tend to be everywhere.
@bigbrutha_ For any senior role in any serious organisation, you focus is on managing stakeholders, establishing relationships, and bringing in new business.
Leave the grunt work for the entry level and strategy execution for the mid level professionals.
Set the direction.
