A Nigerian colleague recently lost her Job/ sponsorship in the UK because of a TikTok trend.

For those of you who think your employers / colleagues can’t find you on social media…please erase that, because you’d be shocked!

One of her colleagues found her TikTok post of over “12 MONTHS OLD!” Where she was ranting about the stress she sustained from caring for an “overweight patient” she described her condition without a single reference to the patient’s name.

This post was taken to the HR… and all
went down the hill from there…

Things that shouldn’t make it to the media as a nurse…

*Any information that can be traced back to a patient in your care

*Any information that can be traced back to a scenario that happened between you and a colleague or in your department

*Any information that paints your employers in a BAD light!

*Any information that’s against professional standards/ethics especially if you have your employer details anywhere on your profile…

It’s ok to have personal opinions about certain topics on social media… but have the discernment to know topics that are off limits… or learn a better way to communicate / express yourself.

The difference between a professional and a layman’s perspective/ approach is in the TRAINING.

To safely use social media as a NURSE/ HCW… please be very familiar with your employer’s SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY!

If you’re an internationally trained Nurse,/HCW… that plans to practice abroad in the future… tweets from the past that falls into the categories I mentioned above can still be pulled up and used as a reference against you… let’s be guided.
