The European native oyster (Ostrea edulis) population has declined by 95% since the 1950s, and oysters are now extinct in some regions of Europe, such as the Wadden Sea along the coast of Germany.

Oyster habitats (reefs) are the most degraded habitats among coastal systems globally, and 99% have been lost in the last 150 years. Native Oyster Reef Restoration Ireland exists to bring some of them back.
