@NPR My son’s bills were submitted to a collections agency less than 10 days after he passed. I was in the process of paying them & without notifying me, my upcoming payments were canceled, his medical records closed & all balance sent to collections agency. @ynhhealth
@ntepper90@modrnhealthcr I am not surprised at all! @Aetna and @MeritainHealth have denied multiple claims for us this year, including prenatal screenings deeming them as “investigative and experimental”.
@DrVickieLynn Option 2. As the parent of a child with a life limiting illness, I struggled with separating my son from his disease. Took a while for it to settle in my mind that the disease was someTHING he had, not WHO he was.
@Dr_Oubre I’m not an MD but I’ve spent enough time studying my son’s condition (congenital muscular dystrophy), where resp failure is common. And it scares me everyday to know tht the insurance company is looking for smallest reasons to deny claims adding to stress of overwhelmed parents
@Dr_Oubre I’m thankful for your helpful post & am equally horrified that this is the reality of our HC system! My 5-mo old son is in the PICU with resp failure & I cannot imagine the ins. company denying claims bc of lack of explicit wording or pH not low enough, pCO2 not high enough.
@SandraNoDuerme My little 4 month old has been diagnosed with a complex medical condition & no other job besides academia would allow me to care for him & continue working (writing on the back burner for now). So despite all the negatives, for now, academia is a lifesaver! ❤️🩹
@TX2005TX@GradSkoolStrugs Same with me while I was in grad school. I know that the professor who pushed me beyond my comfort zone boundaries was the one who taught me the most and I had him for two of my courses. I think I learned more in those two courses than several others combined 🤷🏻♀️
@NouvelleOnde@GradSkoolStrugs I’ve tried adding in short videos, podcasts, brief reports, etc. as supplementary to their assigned weekly readings but haven’t had much luck. So I’m not sure the number of readings per se was problematic, more that there were any readings at all! 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
@NouvelleOnde@GradSkoolStrugs Totally agree!! So I even went in, separated and marked them as“Required Readings” and “Suggested Readings” which reduced the overall reading load. Unfortunately, it seemed like any non-zero number of readings was just too much!
@KeithNHumphreys Thank you for sharing your story! So often we (maybe just me) see people “winning” awards and think/feel the path is straight-ish even though we know in our hearts that it’s anything but.
@laiabalcells Ah yes! The joys of navigating immigration issues at every insitution you study/work just to get caught up to speed on things. It should follow the research/teaching/service sections (for academic researchers) right alongside conferences!!
@verymessyjamie @OpenAcademics@PhDspeaks@PhDSurvival@PhDVoice@PhD_Genie It was eye-opening to realize that I didn’t have to put pressure on myself that I *HAD TO* write for 8 hours everyday+weekends. This way, I took breaks, worked out, played with my pup, hiked with my husband and was still productive. AND did all this during covid!
@verymessyjamie @OpenAcademics@PhDspeaks@PhDSurvival@PhDVoice@PhD_Genie Great thread! I did the same, except my accountability buddy was my chair to whom I sent a draft every 2 weeks. While waiting for feedback, I kept going on further chapters. Never more than 4-6 hrs of writing/day, nothing before 10a, after 6p, or weekends. Writing done in 6 mo!!!
@kaitlynmwerner We just got notified that we have to revise our paper because it was self-plagiarized and the similarities were in the methods (data sources, variables) and limitations. We were told by the assoc editor to keep similarities to <1%.
@FriedsonAndrew This would be so incredibly helpful for our MHA students who come in with little to no background in Econ as a way to understand the basics of how healthcare in the US should/does work. Looking forward to reading this book!
