Background:

Christopher Carelse, was a co-accused in a high-profile Cape Town drug trafficking and organised crime case.

He was shot dead this afternoon on, just two weeks after turning State witness.

Carelse was arrested in July 2025 alongside former bank manager Raed Cupido following the discovery of 15 bricks of cocaine, valued at an estimated R18 million, in self-storage units in Roeland Street, Cape Town.

Police also seized an arsenal of prohibited firearms and ammunition, including an AK-103 assault rifle, an Uzi Pro and stolen handguns.

Prosecutors alleged that the pair were among the first receivers of cocaine smuggled into South Africa by international drug cartels.

The the timing of his death is likely to intensify scrutiny of the case and raise questions about possible links to his reported cooperation with authorities.

Investigators are expected to examine all possible motives, including whether the murder was connected to the ongoing organised crime prosecution.
