There is hardly anyone with eyes to see who would not observe, with deep disenchantment, the decline of ideas, serious debate, and basic civility in our age. But decline should not surprise us. Anything left without discipline, vigilance, and deliberate preservation eventually deteriorates. Languages lose their richness, institutions lose their purpose, and cultures slowly forget the principles that once gave them strength and stability. Civilisations are no different.

What is far rarer is finding men and women who are willing to labour against that decline, individuals determined to hold back the collapse and restore order where confusion now reigns. Such people do exist, but their number is obscured beneath the multitude of those who neither understand the times nor possess any appetite to confront them.

Yet I remain convinced that the responsibility for cultural renewal rests chiefly upon Christian men and women. I place no hope in the spirit of the age. The world, left to itself, descends naturally into struggle, appetite, and power. But Christians are called to something higher. We are called to restore sanity where there is disorder, truth where there is falsehood, beauty where there is vulgarity, and virtue where there is decay.

This work must begin close to home: in our families, our churches, our schools, and our communities. Civilisation is not repaired first in parliaments but in the habits, convictions, and loves of ordinary people.

At this point, the decline surrounding us is becoming unsustainable. The distance between modern man and brute instinct grows thinner by the day. If there is to be renewal, it cannot remain a future aspiration or a conference discussion. We must act, and we must act now.

It is the nature of all things left unattended to wither and decay. Furniture that is neglected is eaten by termites. Cars, when not properly maintained, are consumed by rust. Even the human body, when denied due care, deteriorates: teeth decay, the skin loses its firmness, and the heart’s strength declines. What is true of the body is equally true of the mind.

An uncultivated mind is among the greatest liabilities to human flourishing. The disorder it produces does not remain local; its consequences are felt far beyond its immediate environment. Yet there are minds that are not merely uncultivated, but steadily dulled, rendered insensitive to the very need and urgency of cultivation. Such minds become anaemic to truth, goodness, and beauty. They come to regard those who pursue the full stature of humanity and labour for the cultural and moral renewal of society as tedious, slow, and irrelevant.

This condition characterises much of our present culture, where sensibilities have been blunted by uncritical immersion in popular culture. For many, the pursuit of beauty and goodness in music, literature, art, architecture, and theology appears unnecessary, even burdensome.

There is, therefore, a direct connection between the neglect of the mind and the belief that the soul does not truly matter. It was for this reason that I wrote When the Soul No Longer Counts. A people who are convinced that the soul must be nourished with truth, goodness, and beauty will never be indifferent to the cultivation of the mind.

Christians, in particular, must take the training of the mind with utmost seriousness, for it is the seat of wisdom and virtue. A mind left uncultivated is not merely a private loss; it becomes a public tragedy and a heavy burden upon society.
