While out canvassing for @AndyBurnhamGM over the weekend, I was asked for thoughts about what a progressive defence policy could look like. So I decided to write about it for @NewDiplomacyUK.

Great to have chaired a BritCham EU meeting in Brussels yesterday. Industry had the opportunity to listen to and ask questions of Tobias Cremer MEP (🇩🇪, S&D) who has led the @Europarl_EN efforts on on a potential single market for defence and UK-EU defence and security relations.
Excl: Foreign defence giants will be forced to create British jobs if they want to cash in on lucrative UK military contracts under plans being drawn up by ministers.
The MoD is weeks away from unveiling an "offset" policy requiring overseas firms to give something back to Britain when they win defence deals - through factories, apprenticeships, UK suppliers or other investment.

"But be wary - the idea that the UK can make up for its own spending shortfall by selling more than it buys is based on a flawed conception of defence economics. The reality is that if the UK is not willing to purchase its own capability, then why would anybody else?"
Dear football,
Today, I want to share with you that this season will be my last as a professional footballer. After so many years living my dream, I feel it’s time to start a new chapter in my life.
Being honest, even though I have been preparing myself for this moment, I found it hard to write this letter. After 20 seasons , many people have played an important role in my career.
When I first kicked a ball as a child in Pamplona with my schoolmates, I never imagined the amazing journey ahead. I’m grateful for every moment: the wins, the tough losses, the challenges, and most of all, the people I’ve met and the friendships I’ve made along the way.
To my teammates, coaches, and every staff member at all the clubs I’ve been lucky to be part of, thank you for helping me grow as a person and a player every day. Wearing the shirts of CA Osasuna, Olympique Marseille, Chelsea FC, Atlético de Madrid, Sevilla FC, and representing my country at the biggest stages has been a true privilege. Every moment has meant so much to me…
Andy Burnham unveils plans for reindustrialisation, taking stronger public control of essentials, and also calls for a council house building programme on a scale not seen since after World War II

A Labour Party Spokesperson said:
"Labour's ruling body, the National Executive Committee has today given permission to Andy Burnham to stand in the candidate selection process in the forthcoming by-election for the Makerfield constituency."
📽️ This isn't just about Keir Starmer and whether he'll be PM in a few days/weeks.
It's about the economic quandary the UK's faced with and whether any future govt can or will confront it.
My primer on why markets are quite so fretful about the UK👇
STUBB: It's been four years. In four years during World War II, Russia advanced to Berlin. In four years in Ukraine, with all of their military might, they have advanced to Pokrovsk.
@JamesHenryChard As a resident, I’d like to see you be bold and accept more planning permissions to build a lot more houses in the area and better transport connectivity to central London.
Congratulations to @BlerinaHashani, @florentsherifi, and Erza Doda on their recent successful elections as Labour councillors in London.
It’s fantastic to see three excellent representatives of the British-Kosovar community stepping up to deliver for their communities and constituents. Their success is a testament to the growing contribution of the British-Kosovar community to public life in the UK.
PM Carney on Louise Arbour: "In 1999, in the middle of a war, she signed the indictment of a sitting head of state, Slobodan Milošević, for crimes against humanity and violations of the laws of war. Something that had never been done before."
The value for money myth comes up constantly. If you are simultaneously rebuilding your nuclear and estate infra, life ext the SSBN, building a new SSBN & warhead because you deferred the costs for years and now that expenditure is non discretionary then there is NO money left
Some bank hol thoughts on why it’s important to ensure we are not misunderstanding the international context before pushing defence and foreign policy in certain directions - and how 🇬🇧 should operate & communicate to the public as a result.
