I cannot stress enough that we (rural America) need to have a real conversation about growing commodities for other countries, for them to process (that’s where the real money is), while our small farms end up bankrupt and Main Street businesses fold.

I think we need to take a step back, and we need to ask what people want to eat. Because what they want to eat, they’ll buy, and that means we need to stop growing the cheap commodities, and we need to start growing real food, and putting the other unnecessary cropland acres back to pasture or trees.

What do we need?

We need to rebuild our cattle herd.

We need cleaner air and water.

We need to keep our soils from moving.

And we need to grow the foods people are going to be eating.

That means high quality beef, chicken, lamb, and hogs.

That means real vegetables and fruit trees.

That also doesn’t compute with X9’s and massive equipment, but it does take more labor, more people planting, tending, and harvesting, and it also means local food security.

But perhaps even most importantly, it means national security, both in the military sense, and in the lense of future production.

We need to have a real conversation about where we want to go, rather than constantly fighting about how to get back to where we were.

Just my $0.02 of course, but I’m tired of seeing small farms disappearing, and I know that having one for ourself is the best thing we’ve ever done (besides welcoming our daughter).
