Research shows that training without shoes can enhance foot and ankle strength, improve proprioception (that mind–body connection), and optimize natural movement patterns—all of which help boost performance and stability. Studies even suggest some athletes might jump higher when barefoot. For example, an experimental crossover trial found that participants jumped marginally higher—though the difference was small—when barefoot (32.8 cm) versus shod (32.1 cm) .
Other biomechanics research revealed that barefoot landings produce lower vertical ground reaction forces compared to shod landings—meaning better force absorption and smoother transfer through your joints.
Plus, a study using vertical jump tests and the Bosco test indicated barefoot or minimalist conditions resulted in greater relative peak power and jump height compared with traditional sneakers—likely because shoes dissipate some of your force via cushioning.
