In response to the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela, AWMH is granting $100,000 in support through longtime partner @directrelief.

While the full scale of the damage is yet to be determined, the United Nations is reporting that up to 6.8 million Venezuelans may be affected, including those displaced or losing access to electricity and water. More than 68,000 people were reported missing within three days of the disaster, and the official death toll is approaching 2,000.

Direct Relief is preparing medical aid commonly needed after earthquakes, including first-aid supplies, hygiene items for displaced families, medicines used to treat acute injuries, and chronic disease medications for people whose access to routine care may be interrupted.

AWMH’s $100,000 grant will support Direct Relief as the organization continues to respond to requests in the region as they become known.

✝️ Hace apenas unos días expliqué por qué la Cruz de la Orden de Cristo en el escudo de Portugal no era un simple adorno.

Representaba siglos de historia, la identidad de una nación y una de las raíces más profundas de la civilización portuguesa. Hoy esa cruz pierde su protagonismo en el nuevo rediseño de la Federación Portuguesa de Fútbol.

No es solo una cuestión estética. Vivimos en una época donde los símbolos históricos y cristianos son simplificados, diluidos o relegados bajo el argumento de la modernidad y el diseño digital. La Cruz de la Orden de Cristo acompañó las grandes expediciones portuguesas y ha sido durante siglos uno de los emblemas más reconocibles del país.

Cuando una nación reduce el peso de sus propios símbolos, no está modernizando su identidad; está debilitando el vínculo con su historia. Un escudo puede cambiar, pero el mensaje que transmite ese cambio también importa. Las tradiciones que dejan de defenderse terminan desapareciendo.

Un diseño nefasto por muy minimalista y funcional que parezca.

🇯🇵 Japón advirtió hace más de 20 años sobre la vulnerabilidad sísmica de Caracas.

Este recorte de prensa corresponde a la entrega del "Estudio sobre el Plan Básico de Prevención de Desastres en el Distrito Metropolitano de Caracas", elaborado por la Agencia de Cooperación Internacional del Japón (JICA) junto con especialistas venezolanos.

El proyecto se desarrolló entre 2002 y 2005, y su informe final fue entregado oficialmente al entonces presidente Hugo Chávez en marzo de 2005.

Contrario a lo que algunos creen, el estudio no predecía un terremoto. Lo que hacía era advertir, con base científica, que Caracas es una ciudad altamente vulnerable por su ubicación geológica, las características de sus suelos y la necesidad urgente de fortalecer la planificación urbana, actualizar las normas de construcción y mejorar la preparación ante desastres.

Además del riesgo sísmico, el informe también evaluó amenazas como deslizamientos e inundaciones, proponiendo medidas concretas para reducir el impacto de futuros eventos naturales.

Las advertencias estaban sobre la mesa. El conocimiento existía. Las recomendaciones también.

Sin embargo, el informe fue ignorado.

Hoy, Venezuela paga las consecuencias de haber desestimado durante décadas las advertencias de la ciencia y la prevención.
