Remember last week when we discovered Spain had a colony in Africa? Yeah me too, that was fun. Turns out they have 7. This is the big reason I dislike them. I worked for a marketing agency making graphics using ChatGPT. The number of times the AI put untrue information it thought sounded better than reality, it made me leery of AI graphics. Also, I’d rather read someone’s actual thoughts than the same recycled phrases and predictable cadence AI always falls into.

so, this entire situation has been, complex to watch play out, for me, for Cleveland small world reasons.

I went to high school with Max Miller. He was a year ahead. Didn’t really know him - seemed like a rich white boy who threw parties I wasn’t invited to. Mother Jones reported on a high school “incident.” At the time I couldn’t figure out where the girl - a buddy from math class - disappeared to. I “learned” more later but it was…high school gossip. Plenty of people I knew/know knew/know Max.

Bernie Moreno was the luxury car salesman on local tv commercials when I was a kid. Met him once while reporting years ago, he was kind and thoughtful even though we obviously come from different political tribes. His daughter’s attorneys are both people I’ve known in personal and professional contexts. Her DV claims are textbook.

All that to say, I completely get the media impulse to pressure Sen. Moreno about why he didn’t say something sooner. And also: we live in an era where I think sometimes our expectations of extent and immediacy with which “public figures” “should” publicly discuss complicated elements of their private lives and our entitlement to such litigation are unreasonable or unfair.

As someone who has written publicly about leaving an abusive husband, I can say that this woman’s reaction is completely understandable. I also walked on eggshells, doing everything I could to appear calm, avoid escalating situations, and prevent more anger or harm directed toward me or my loved ones.

Her calm response does not indicate that abuse wasn’t happening, nor does it prove that it was. However, using her reaction as “proof” that abuse did not occur is telling. I suspect that she has evidence that tells a very different story.

Paxton is irrelevant to my criticism of Talarico. I do not have to defend every Republican before I am allowed to criticize a Democrat, and bringing Paxton up does not answer a single thing I said.

Yes, Christian denominations disagree on some things. That does not mean Christianity has no clear doctrine or that every interpretation is equally biblical. Talarico is not just expressing a different worship style or debating some minor theological issue. He repeatedly takes progressive political positions and then forces Christian language around them.

He said, “God is non-binary.” God is spirit, not a biological human being, but Scripture consistently reveals Him as Father. Jesus taught us to pray, “Our Father.” We do not get to replace the way God revealed Himself with a modern political label because it fits the message we want to push. See John 4:24, Matthew 6:9, and John 14:6–11. There is a massive difference between saying God exists outside of gender and calling him nonbinary. One is biblically sound. The other is a heretical political statement.

He also used Mary’s consent to carrying Jesus as an argument for abortion, saying we only have Jesus because a woman consented to creating Him. Mary’s obedience to God does not prove a right to kill an unborn child. Scripture calls John a baby while he is still in the womb, says God forms us there, and speaks of unborn life as known by God. See Luke 1:41–44, Psalm 139:13–16, and Jeremiah 1:5. Trying to twist the birth of Christ into a pro-abortion argument is blasphemous.

He has also called himself “a Christian who hates Christianity.” Christ condemned hypocrisy and corruption, but He did not hate His Church. Scripture says Christ loved the Church and gave Himself for her. Criticizing sinful Christians is biblical. Treating Christianity itself with contempt while presenting yourself as one of its teachers is not. See Ephesians 5:25–27.

And yes, the teacher part matters. James 3:1 says teachers will be judged more strictly. Titus 1:9 says they must hold firmly to sound doctrine and refute what contradicts it. Second Timothy 4:3–4 warns about people choosing teachers who tell them what they want to hear instead of the truth.

So “different denominations believe different things” is not an answer. My criticism is that Talarico keeps starting with progressive politics and working backward until he can find a way to dress it up as Christianity. A Christian teacher is supposed to submit his politics to Scripture. Talarico repeatedly does the opposite.
