Can we talk about when God randomly changes your desires? You wake up one day and suddenly you lose your taste for all the things you used to do, say, wear, and even the people you used to be around. You want something different, something better, and you think something’s wrong the whole time. Meanwhile, He’s just growing you, maturing you, and shaping you into who He wants you to be. It’s the wilderness season, but it prepares you for the Promised Land.

God deliberately places you in environments that are not easy and among people who may be difficult to understand. It may feel uncomfortable, unfair, or even draining at times. But the truth is, your presence there is not an accident, it is an assignment. God places light in dark places for a purpose. If everyone around you already carried the same spirit, patience, and integrity, your light would not be as visible. But when you stand out by your character, your faith, and your attitude, you become a living testimony of God’s grace.

Difficult people often create the greatest opportunities for spiritual growth. When others complain, you choose gratitude. When others compromise their values, you choose integrity. When others focus on faults, you choose to see the potential and dignity God placed in people. In doing so, you reflect the nature of Christ. Your response becomes more powerful than any argument, because people are not only hearing your words, they are witnessing your life.

Scripture reminds us that God intentionally places His people where they can influence the world around them. Jesus said in Matthew 5:14–16, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden… Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Light is most noticeable in darkness. Your kindness, patience, and faith may be the very evidence of God that someone else needs to see.

The apostle Paul encouraged believers in Philippians 2:14–15, “Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine like stars in the world.” When you refuse to join negativity, you rise above it. Your calm spirit, your gratitude, and your integrity become a quiet but powerful influence.

God also reminds us in Romans 12:21, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” This means you don’t allow difficult attitudes to change who you are. Instead, your goodness becomes the force that transforms the atmosphere around you.

Sometimes the very people who challenge you the most are the ones God is using to reveal the strength, patience, and love He has placed within you. You may never fully know the impact of your example. Your patience may soften a hardened heart. Your integrity may inspire someone to choose what is right. Your gratitude may lift a discouraged soul.

So when you find yourself surrounded by difficulty, remember: you are not misplaced, you are positioned. God trusts you to carry His light into that environment. Stand firm in your character, walk in love, and continue to reflect His goodness. Where others see frustration, you bring peace. Where others see flaws, you see potential. And where others bring darkness, you shine the light of God.

I genuinely think the worst thing the internet did to reading was convince people that finishing books is a competitive sport. You don't need to read 52 books a year. You just need to read. Books you like. At your own pace. And think about them for longer than a TikTok video.
