CW: natural disasters, flooding
This is where I used to work in Brazil & I owe a lot of my political education and radicalization to Black and Indigenous activists I met during my time there
If you have anything to spare, even few dollars can go a long way ❤️

In both situations, people act like me taking COVID precautions or not eating foods that can cause anaphylaxis is simply a personal "preference" that's specifically designed to annoy them or something
like hey I'm just trying to stay alive and have an okay time
huge overlap between people who have an issue with me taking COVID precautions and people who give me a hard time for having severe allergies
The Venn Diagram isn't a circle, but it's pretty damn close
As a CC person w/ a shellfish allergy, this is hella accurate and I’d take it a step further. They don’t just talk about it, they’ll knowingly expose you to it, then put all the responsibility of navigating the repercussions of exposure on you if you get sick.
Signature Theatre in VA has a few accessibility-focused performances (masks required, ASL interpreted, etc.) for their Pippin run
Does anyone know of other theatres that have similar accessibility measures in place?

the next tweet says the person has been isolated since they got there, so it may be the person with symptoms who was already separated - but idk what definition of isolation they're using atp lol

Let precision and nuance be your north stars when communicating with the public. Respect people's ability to process uncertainties. So-called "audiences" are your partners, not your pupils. 4/
Let people know what the data and evidence are indicating so far -- but also share what's still puzzling scientists, and what the scientific community seeks to discover. People will reciprocate by sharing with you: their questions, qualms, concerns, and needs. 5/

Part of me wants to join a book club, but I've only recently rediscovered my love for reading after I burnt out from all the info I was having to read for previous jobs and grad school
I feel like being put on a deadline would just bring that burnout right back 🥲
New Orleans residents felt betrayed when Hurricane Katrina exposed deep inequities in federal disaster response. Here's what we can learn from the mistakes of 2005's recovery and preparation efforts. https://t.co/rbOT94rBfA
And I find it irresponsible when people act like health communicators saying "we haven't dealt with this specific strain in these contexts before, so let's not be too dismissive" is the same as panicking
It's not panic - it's a necessary level of precaution at this stage
"What is Ebola and why is stopping the latest outbreak so difficult?"
One reason in the article is that it's a rare strain so the initial blood tests (which are designed for more common strains) came back negative

In conversations around the Ebola and hantavirus outbreaks, I've seen some pundits ignoring that these outbreaks are notable *because* of the specific strains involved
Seems important to acknowledge before making definitive claims:

🐢 Late May–July is turtle nesting season, when female turtles leave lakes and ponds in search of nesting sites. If you see a turtle out of the water, please leave it alone.
