“진눈깨비” is such a winter song.

When we recorded the album. We focused on how to deliver those chill, sharp winter feeling with the guitar sound. Old Norwegian black metal songs were my reference. We ended up using a single coil telecaster with high gain distortion to achieve that sound.

I struggled singing this song for a long time. It is no "shouting all the time" kind of music. I had to learn how to control my voice in that passaggio range. I tend to scream loud in that range, but that way I couldn't really deliver the feeling of the song properly.

The song had 3 choruses, which I sang gradually more sadly and painfully. The first chorus feels light and bittersweet, then it becomes almost like a cry.

Oftentimes I put multiple meanings in one text. Personal, psychological, philosophical, political and so on. But this song focuses on one very simple emotion.

It snows a lot in winter in seoul. Even this city looks beautiful when it's all covered in snow. When it sleets, all the dirts of us leave foot prints on the muddy snow.

It is our dirt. Our sin. Our end.

"선량한 시민들이 나라를 망치고 있다“ is probably the shortest Madmans Esprit song. It's very punk.

Who are the good citizens? The ones who obey. The ones who preserve. The ones who sustain. The majority. The normal. The exploited who want to exploit. The ones who conform.

Think of South Korea's geography.

"Mismatch" is also basically the same song, but all rerecorded.

There's a minor difference with the vocal melody. Which I originally was hesitating to put in the single version as well. But I think this way it fits the general vibe of the album better. It makes the song somewhat sadder, more melancholic.

Can you spot the difference?

I also recorded the verse with a different tone. The single version has more hiphop like groove. I wanted it to be darker, more gloomy to fit the album. Also, the world became darker and gloomier. When you think about the text of the song, how I feel this song has changed too.

Unlike most other songs, with "장님과 코끼리" the whole band worked on it together from the very early stage of song writing.

Somyul was strongly insisting that I shouldn't have clean vocal for the chorus part, which I actually was already thinking about.

Even though the song writing process was very different from the other songs, I think it turned out to be a very "Madmans Esprit" song.

The keywords for the text are :
War, Ideology and people.

"Please Stop Loving me" is basically the same song, just all newly recorded, mixed and mastered.

I find my vocal performance much better with the album version.

When it's a single release, we aim the sound to be much more "in your face." Heavily compressed, everything super loud, so it stands out between other songs.

Some of you might have noticed that the album is a lot quieter than other modern metal albums. That's because we wanted the album to express maximum dynamic.

It's a double bladed sword. If you focus on only one album and listen through the whole songs, it will definitely bring out much more dynamic from each song. But if you listen to only one song from the album between other music, it might sound kind of boring.

I normally listen to albums from the first song until the last song in one go. I don't listen to singles that much.

We put a lot of care in how each song would sound in the flow of the album.

It might be also fun to compare the sound differences between the single version and the album version.

I don't want to talk too deeply about "이제 그만 죽자", since this song is too personal for me.

I wrote the text of this song when I just left everything and everyone. Sleeping outside like a homeless person, thinking about how I could end my life.

Then I decided to go back home, (I actually don't remember whether I came back home because I wanted to or if somebody found me and dragged me home.) then wrote the whole song that day.

There has been some disagreements with the guitar solo between me and Somyul.

He didn't like the guitar solo I wrote originally, then I didn't like the guitar solo he newly wrote.

We went back and forth like that a lot of times until we could both be satisfied with it.

I find the song very Korean somehow. It remind me of some Korean folk songs from the 80's.

Also the music video of the song might be my personal favorite so far.
The theme of the video came from a dream I had like 15 years ago, which I can just never forget.

Did you know that "이제 그만 죽자" can mean both "Let's just die now" and "Let's stop dying now"?

I've been wanting to share some behind-the-scenes stories about each song from the latest album. Since the documentary is out now, it's finally time. (Hope you enjoyed the documentary.)

The first track "인생은 아름다워“ was originally written 5-6 years ago, if I'm remembering it correctly.

The whole text was written under 5 minutes, it was one of those times I don't even have to think. It just flowed out of my brain. I guess it was just what I was thinking about automatically under my subconsciousness.

I recorded the demo alone at my home, and it just stayed unfinished until the last year when we started to write it all together.

When I actually started to record for the album, I was very unhappy with my vocals and I just had to record it over and over again.

We eventually decided to use the vocal recording from the demo track, since no matter how many times I re-record it, I couldn't bring back the feeling that I had in the demo recording.

I wanted the song to deliver manic happiness turning into sadness and then all mixed into madness.

The title "인생은 아름다워“ (Life is beautiful) comes from a random sign I saw on the street.

It's ironic, but true.

어제 공개된 다큐멘터리를 보고 사람들이 규호를 나쁘게 이야기하는 것을 보았다. 영상 속 단편적인 모습으로 인해 규호가 오해를 받는 것 같아 괴롭다.

규호는 아주 어릴 때부터 함께 지내며, 내가 힘들 때 언제나 현실적이고 정신적인 지지를 아끼지 않았던 친구이다. 내 부족함을 객관적으로 짚어주고 더 나은 방향으로 이끌어 주었기에, 내가 조금이라도 더 나은 사람으로 성장할 수 있었다.

다큐멘터리에 나온 작업 과정에서의 갈등은 온전히 내 잘못에서 비롯된 것이었으며, 규호는 늘 그렇듯 나와 밴드를 위해 진심으로 걱정하고 객관적인 관점에서 말해주었을 뿐이다.

내 인생을 함께 겪어보지 않았다면 우리의 관계를 완벽히 이해하기 어려울 수 있고, 누군가는 규호를 나쁘게 생각할 수도 있다. 하지만 내가 분명히 하고 싶은 건 규호라는 친구를 만�� 것은 인생 최고의 행운이라는 것이다.

내게 소중한 사람이 오해로 인해 비난받는 상황을 지켜보는 것은 고통스럽다.
이 이상 단편적인 관점에서 비롯된 규호에 대한 비난은 멈추고, 그럴 시간에 당신의 소중한 사람에게 더 신경 써보면 어떨까 제안하고 싶다.
