If only it were that simple but . . . perhaps, it /can/ be. For just a little while.
“Let’s do something together. Get your mind off things,” he murmurs, hand seeking the mercenary’s where it hands listlessly at his side. Kadaj takes it into his own. Draws it up to brush kisses—
The touch of Kadaj’s forehead grounds Cloud enough to let go off the tension in his shoulders. A sigh escapes, defeat rolling hot on his tongue as it urges him to draw back and look at the Remnant before him.
“ No more. “ It’s a tired request, worn from weeks and months of —
—the Remnant warm than accept what lies ahead for them.
No, he does not argue. He does not speak.
Instead, Kadaj steps forward and curls both arms around the back of his husband’s neck. Warm and sure. Familiar.
This is his /home/. So he gently brings their foreheads together.
He does not rise to the bait, despite how much he longs to gnash his teeth against the desperation pouring from those startling blue eyes like tears.
It scares him. Seeing it. He knows Cloud means every word he grits out. He knows Cloud would sooner set himself aflame to keep—
“ Because the alternative is a devastating path I will 𝗻𝗼𝘁 walk. I will not pave it for myself in this cruel reality, nor will I entertain the possibility inside my head. “
@ShinRasRufus “I have the right to know whether my husband is putting his own life at risk for some lost fucking cause.”
The lost cause being the Remnant, of course. But Kadaj doesn’t need to say it. It’s obvious enough.
“Rufus.” He does not use his first name often, nor lightly. “/Please/.”
@ShinRasRufus It’s a long while before he can muster up the words.
“I thinks Cloud is . . . doing something. Stupid. And reckless,” he begins, in a whisper. “He’s distant. He looks worn to the bone. And I could have sworn the other say, he smelled . . . astringent. Sterile. Like a hospital.”
@ShinRasRufus “It can be.”
Jaw cocked, the Remnant looks away, then, arms crossed over his chest like he’s somehow trying to guard himself. The shadows beneath his eyes are heavy. Dark and deeply carved.
He opens his mouth to clarify. Closes it. Sighs heavily.
“. . . Forget it.”
He falls quiet. He knows there’s no sense in circling around the same argument, the same unspoken worries, over and over again. It’s clear they’re both exhausted of it.
Still . . .
“You sound so sure. I can’t help but wonder why.”
@ShinRasRufus Good to know.
I was just testing you though. You can have the coffee. No yacht required.
What I really want in return is a favour. One small favour. No questions asked.
