Great to see the new Minister for Conservation, the Hon. Poto Williams, out at the Catchpool, #RemutakaForestPark this morning.
A warm welcome on a wild and windy winter's day! Brisk
walk along the Nga Taonga Trail and back to the Catchpool Centre for more kōrero and kai. 🌿
@KorimakoEcology We also considered an MSI gaming laptop for a thousand dollars less which also had the nVidia RTX-3070 card and an 8 core/ 16 thread Intel CPU. Suggest check the range out a PB Tech Wellington or Petone. 🌿😎
@KorimakoEcology Might be over your budget allocation (at $4k) but I recently purchased an ASUS ROG Strix G533QR gaming laptop for our AI number-crunching/ acoustic monitoring work.
Has 8 core 16 thread AMD R9 CPU and RTX-3070 GPU, 32Gb RAM. Win11. 15" 1080p 300Hz refresh rate, it's a beast!
We are conducting a whole of park NZ native bat survey over the next few months. From Cross Creek to the Catchpool, and Waiorongomai. Here's an acoustic recorder deployed yesterday in the Catchpool Valley wetlands. 🌿
During the recent cold spell here in Wellington, one of our Remutaka kiwi ventured out overnight from the burrow to forage for food as usual, but this time leaving clear footprints and probe-marks behind. Photo by Karen Baker, our RFPT Treasurer, and one of our kiwi trackers.🌿

Our trap network is now full-spectrum, targeting all pest critters, not just stoats, so the majority of our traps are no longer in boxes. Network now protects 7,500Ha.

Heh! 'Operation Mystic' should read Operation Nest Egg (O.N.E.) or Egg Heists as we call them. 😀
Aseroe rubra - Anemone stinkhorn fungus - great photo taken by Rosemary, one of our volunteers, whilst out 'walking in the bush on purpose'. #RemutakaConservationTrust. These fungi look and smell terrible at later life-stages! #RFPT.
Anemone stinkhorn fungus spotted in the #RemutakaForestPark. Lovely example of this fungus from the Phallaceae family of fungi (Order phallales). These are quite commonly seen along walking tracks in the #RemutakaRange, as are many other colourful fungi in these rain forests.
Fish aren’t nearly as at-risk of ingesting 1080 as the fear mongering posts on social media might lead someone to believe. 1080 operations have no effect on trout or native fish, or the water in the streams, rivers and lakes where they live.

It's that time of the year again when tui gather in great numbers in the Kowhai trees at the Catchpool Centre car par in the #RemutakaForestPark. Entertaining and melodious! #RFPT.
Lunchtime view of the stream after placing an IR camera on an incubating kiwi's burrow. Bushnell Trail Cam. Skerret's Creek Bridge on way out. #RemutakaForestPark. #RFPT.
A GoodNature A24 self-setting trap working quietly away dispatching invasive pests in the #RemutakaForestPark. #RFPT. We have more than a thousand of these now supplementing our extensive DOC 200 and DOC 250 trap network - working overtime in a mega-mast year.
