When you have the Guardiola era of football redefining what a midfielder is supposed to be into that Xavi/Iniesta brand of player that is small and an extremely refined passer, people are extremely resistant to accept any other type of quality player. I'm pretty confident that if Jude was listed as a 9 or a false 9, people would unanimously hail him as one of the best players in the world, but it's that dissonance with what you expect a midfielder to be and what Jude is that makes people confused.

And the fact that he is so unmistakably English in his footballing aesthetics. English footballing culture has been stamped out and demeaned over the past couple decades, especially because the Premier League has not really had any success with English managers in the last 15 years (Spanish and German managers coming over and taking over things). So the classic football brand that England had of 442, two strikers, box-crashing midfielders is already seen as second-rate football, brutish, and sub elite.

So then you combine these two things, Jude's English identity and aesthetics with his untrendy, dissonant midfield style, and you have a player that modern football fans analyze absolutely horribly when he's easily one of the best footballers in the world.
