サワロサボテンなどの大型サボテンは、水分を含んだ何トンもの重量を支えるために、内部に木のように硬い縦方向の柱状構造を持っている、表面が傷ついたり鳥などの動物に削られたりすることで内部がむき出しになり、まるで肋骨や鳥かごのような不思議な構造が見えるようになる

キツツキなどが穴を掘って巣を作ると、サボテンは水分の蒸発や感染を防ぐために穴の壁面を硬い樹皮のような組織で固める、これが後にサボテンが枯れた際にも壺状の塊として残る『サワロ・ブーツ』と呼ばれる現象であり、砂漠の生き物たちにとって貴重な住みかとなる
