(which proved to be more difficult than I expected and then wandered around until I ended up at Alexanderplatz. There was a little mini festival set up there which was perfect to grab some quick food before taking the subway back to my AirBNB.
I wasn’t sure what the next 24 hours was going to look like so I grabbed a full day pass and headed into the city center.
After checking in at my AirBNB (check out the video I made about the Nena Apartments on FB and IG) I went out in search of an ATM
Here's hoping you have a safe & fun #MemorialDay with your friends & family. Let's make sure to take a moment to remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country today ❤️🤍💙
Day 3 (Part 7): We checked into our Airbnb, "The Monkey Pod" and stopped off on a roadside pull-off to climb down into the Kaumana Caves (Lava Tubes)!! Then we met up Dash's childhood friend's mom, Janet for dinner in Hilo. It was delicious & she even brought us leis!!!
Day 3 (Part 6): We realized it was #NationalBeerDay & decided we need to find a brewery, so after a quick stop at Walmart for dish sponges we made our way to #HiloBrewingCompany for a pint (or two). We met a couple locals there who shared some stories & suggestions for the area.
Day 3 (Part 5):
By this time we were hungry so we made our way into #Hilo and over to Cafe 100, a local spot with very affordable Hawaiian style comfort food. We had a #mocoloco (rice topped with a hamburger patty, gravy and a fried egg) & a fish loco (pictured).
Day 3: (Part 4):
... but the water was rushing out of the huge cave so quickly there was no way anyone was taking a dip there so we went over to Onomea Bay instead and took the quick quarter-mile trail down to the water and watched the waves crash into the cliffs all around us.
Day 3: Waterfalls, Local Eats & Lava Tubes... oh my! (Part 4):
Next up: a drive down the coast to What’s Shakin’ where we grabbed a couple fruity shakes and relaxed a bit. Down the road a bit we stopped off at 6 Ton, supposedly a swimming hole...
Day 3 (Part 3): Just up the road we came into the town of Honomu where we grabbed some coffee before heading inland and up the eastern slope of Mauna Kea, our destination: #AkakaFalls, a 400+ foot waterfall (2.5x Niagara Falls) cascading over a cliff covered in greenery.
Day 3 - (Part 2): After packing up our things we hit the road but didn't make it far before we found some roadside falls tugged into a magical rainforest setting. We pulled over on the side of the road to explore the massive trees & roots of the swiss cheese plants draping down.
Day 3: Waterfalls, Local Eats & Lava Tubes… oh my! (Part 1): 1 of the most beautiful sunrises I've seen, from our hammocks!!! We took our time to get up and make ourselves some breakfast in the community kitchen & took a quick tour of the space since we had gotten in so late.
Day 2 (Part 8): As the sun set we made our way to our home for the night: the #hamakua#campingcabanas… but you’ll have to wait til tomorrow to see those because it was lonnnngg after dark when we arrived.
Mahalo for reading our story today. And hope you have a good one ✌🏽❤️🏝
Day 2 (Part 7): Now that we had made it to the east coast we headed south and found our way to #KalopaStateRecreationArea where we hiked a t#rail through a native #rainforest at 2000 feet above sea level. The flora and fauna were amazing.
Day 2 (Part 6): Next, as we drove across the Big Island, we found a #fruitstand with #cocofrío & had to make a stop. Then on to #WaipioVally. You used to be able to go into the valley but recently they’ve closed the road for fear of collapse under the travel of so many visitors.
Day 2 (Part 5): Just after mile marker 79 we pulled over & headed due west into a lava field in search of a lone palm tree. 20 min later we were standing on a black “sand” beach staring at a very sad palm tree. Let’s just say it wouldn’t make the top of our list of places….
