If someone watches a full 10 minute video at 2x, for example, you'd get 5 minutes of watch time (avd) but 100% retention (avp)

If it makes the viewer happier, it's probably a win/win (if they got bored and dipped 50% of the way in, that'd be 5 minutes of watch time but only 50% retention!)

TL;DR: YouTube has had an imaging pipeline for a long, long time. It's not dissimilar to the pipeline in a modern camera phone trying to get the most out of a relatively small sensor (computational photography)

In YouTube's case, that's video that was likely crunched at the sensor, on disk write, on upload, and then transcoded into all the different resolutions and bitrates offered through the player

It's trying to keep the video looking as good as possible at as deliverable a file size as possible, and is updated pretty constantly

That setting is mostly there for creators who want to specifically share tutorials on video processing, or who want to deliver a specific look, like VHS

If you don't like it, that will also turn it off, but you may not like the turned off version either (because of all the above) so it's worth testing if that's the way you want to go

Barely related but I’ve permanently disabled “adaptive power”. It’s only 10am but after spending a gazzillion dollars on bleeding edge silicon (and a vapor chamber!!)… the system would rather cut the pcores off at the knees (to the point where the keyboard can’t always keep up) to protect battery life in a chonkier-than ever thermal envelop…
