British police have declared a "major incident" near RAF Fairford, the U.S. Air Force base in Gloucestershire, England, after arresting several men on suspicion of offenses under the UK's Explosives Act. Homes in the nearby village of Whelford, about 2 miles from the base, have been evacuated as a precaution while an Army explosive ordnance disposal team examines several vehicles.

No details have been confirmed on the suspects' identities or intent. Police say the incident is contained and are working with partner agencies under established response plans. UK Defense Secretary Wes Streeting said the situation "is being dealt with," and a government spokesperson said Prime Minister Andy Burnham is being briefed, declining further comment while the investigation continues.

RAF Fairford has served since February as a key U.S. hub for bomber operations against Iran, hosting B-1 Lancer and B-52 Stratofortress missions.
