An honor for our #Rentrak data and commentary to be included in the epic in-depth reporting of @brooksbarnesNYT for @nytimes! “To be only 1 percent behind the summer of 2019 is remarkable,” said Paul Dergarabedian, Rentrak’s chief analyst of marketplace trends. “The Gen Z audience — which many people thought would be lost to small screens, especially after the pandemic — has really come out in particular this summer.” Rentrak defines Generation Z as people born from 1997 to 2012, making them about 14 to 29 today. Hollywood’s summer season, which runs from May 1 to Labor Day, has historically accounted for 40 percent of annual ticket sales. So far this season, moviegoers in North America have spent about $1.85 billion on tickets, a 16 percent increase from the same period a year ago, according to @RentrakGlobal. Hollywood’s summer hasn’t gotten off to this strong of a start since 2019, when ticket sales for the same stretch totaled $1.87 billion. @Pixar@toystory 5 @Disney https://t.co/Uggm2DBBCv
To the box office and beyond is the stellar reporting of @sarahwhit10 for @CNBC featuring our exclusive #Rentrak data! “Another incredible summer weekend is on the books as powered by the massive debut of #ToyStory 5,’ a movie that had appeal across every imaginable audience demographic and thus became the ultimate four-quadrant movie,” said Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Rentrak. In the last two years, family-friendly fare with a PG rating has won at the box office, outperforming PG-13 and R-rated films, @RentrakGlobal data shows.
Additionally, animated features are not usually front-loaded at the box office, meaning they steadily generate ticket sales over the course of their run in theaters, gaining word of mouth. "@WaltDisneyCo and @Pixar Animation Studios orchestrated a perfectly timed, flawlessly marketed film that charmed audiences and critics alike that is now set up for weeks of solid playability in movie theaters as it powers toward $1 billion and beyond at the worldwide box office,” Dergarabedian said. @toystory https://t.co/CDPSDg2gTb
The opportunity to discuss the biggest weekend of the year thus far with @jakecoyleAP in his reporting for @AP is like opening a toy chest of box office fun! Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends for @RentrakGlobal, expects that Hollywood is heading for its best summer since before the pandemic. And the success is coming from both expected and unexpected places. “To me, this is a hybrid summer and this could be the new blueprint for how you build the perfect summer box-office beast,” says Dergarabedian #Rentrak. “You throw in a mix of very eclectic films and not just the usual suspects — the big franchise films, the known brands — but also films like @blumhouse@A24's #Backrooms’ and @FocusFeatures@obsessionmovie and original films like @UniversalPics@disclosureday.”

Breaking news from @RentrakGlobal! @WaltDisneyCo presentation of @Pixar's @toystory 5 delivered the biggest opening weekend of 2026 domestically and globally and the biggest opening weekend in franchise history — domestically, internationally, and globally — with an estimated $312.0M worldwide ($160.0M domestic / $152.0M international). #ToyStory #Rentrak
The @WaltDisneyCo's presentation of @Pixar Animation Studios' @toystory 5 looks to generate a franchise best domestic debut of $145 to $160M and $275M worldwide & could go higher depending on walk-up patrons this weekend. The unprecedented summer season box office momentum will pay it forward to #Pixar’s latest from its most beloved series of movies. Notably this will be the first PG-rated “Toy Story” movie and that is a great move since PG movies have been the most popular among all ratings and in both 2024 & 2025 outperformed every rating at the domestic box office. Also, the very timely and relevant portrayal of a small screen device called the #Lilypad, is a modern take within the world of #ToyStory on the @Apple iPad and makes the film even more relatable and relevant to today’s kids and parents alike as a 'teens & tech' storyline develops within the film. “Toy Story 5" is yet another building block for what is shaping up to be the second $4Bn summer season domestically since 2019 following in the footsteps of the ’23 “Barbenheimer” summer. The #Pixar “Toy Story” franchise ranks among one of the most legendary in the annals of cinema. The longevity and continued popularity of Toy Story and the characters and themes expressed in the films has evolved over the years and has become a generational must-see moviegoing experience for families, parents, and kids. Considering that the grosses in our #Rentrak chart are unadjusted for inflation and have a preponderance of kids priced tickets, the “Toy Story” franchise cumulative global box office total of over $3 billion is incredibly impressive and is a testament to the brilliance of the creative teams at Pixar. And just think of the product tie-ins, merchandising and ancillary revenues that could be measured in the hundreds of millions of dollars that demonstrates the power of a franchise to drive more than just theatrical box office but other very lucrative revenue streams that pay dividends to Disney's past, present and future. As grand as an @IMAX screen is the reporting of @janetcho at @barronsonline that features our exclusive @RentrakGlobal data! As this absolutely epic year for movie theaters continues to impress, #IMAX has certainly delivered true event cinema to enthusiastic moviegoers and this article takes a look at the performance the company thus far in 2026. Paul Dergarabedian, Rentrak’s head of marketplace trends, expects both the summer and full-year domestic box office to be the biggest since 2019. He told Barron’s that “the summer of ‘26 is running just 3.5% behind the Avengers: Endgame-powered summer of ‘19.” Hollywood’s domestic box office sales of $4.17 billion through Sunday are about 13% ahead of the same point last year, and the summer box office since May 1 is outpacing last summer by an estimated 11%, according to #Rentrak.
