Temperatures are expected to dip below freezing but remain above the critical 20°F mark statewide, minimizing grid stress. With demand projected to stay under 70 GW—well below the 75 GW threshold for concern—the grid is prepared to handle the forecasted conditions.
Winter Weather Update (Jan. 5, 2024):
Legislative actions and reforms to ERCOT and the PUC have strengthened grid resilience since the 2021 winter storm Uri, with improved winterization standards and oversight enhancing reliability.
For the upcoming cold snap, ERCOT’s planning and preparedness should ensure sufficient power availability, supported by better communication and contingency measures.
