Today, I honored our hero first responders on the floor of the House of Representatives. They neutralized the tank at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove and got 50,000 neighbors home safely. But our community is still picking up the pieces of this crisis. I am calling on GKN to take full responsibility.
I just spoke with GKN Aerospace leadership and, once again, urged the company to take full responsibility for the hazmat crisis at their Garden Grove plant. GKN Aerospace informed me that they are establishing a fund through Orange County United Way to provide relief to those with the greatest financial need. While this decision is a necessary acknowledgment that they have broken faith with our community, it is insufficient. Every family and small business that was displaced or shut down during this crisis deserves full compensation. I expressed that this is non-negotiable. https://t.co/7MUnb9LvC9

As a former consumer protection lawyer, I am deeply concerned by reports that residents and small businesses impacted by the Garden Grove hazmat incidents have had insurance claims denied. If you were recently denied by your insurance company, know that this may not be the end of the road. Please seek advice from a credible legal organization to review the specific terms of your policy and assist you in pursuing future action. https://t.co/g3QJUbxosR
During the Garden Grove hazmat crisis, 5,000 businesses were forced to shut down. Workers lost wages and businesses lost profits critical to operating expenses. I'm pushing for the @SBAgov@SBA_Kelly to formally declare a disaster declaration so our small business owners can successfully apply for assistance and protect the livelihoods that depend on them.
With the worst behind us, now is the time for oversight. Our community deserves to know why this disaster happened and what those responsible are going to do to make sure it never happens again. I am going to do everything in my power to get those answers so our community can recover.
Now that the evacuation orders have been lifted, I am focused on getting justice for the 50,000 families who were displaced by the emergency at GKN Aerospace. I've called on GKN leaders to not only take full responsibility for this weekend's chaos, but also to meet with our neighbors and work to rebuild their trust. Our community can't thrive if they're scared of hazards in their own backyard.
The health and safety of our community is always my number one priority. Now that the immediate threat is gone, it is time for a full investigation into what went wrong at GKN to cause so much chaos for our community. I’ve called on the leadership of GKN to speak with our neighbors and start to rebuild trust with the community and I will continue to push for transparency and accountability.
I'm so grateful that the immediate threat to our communities has been lifted. I cannot begin to express my gratitude to the OC Fire Authority and every first responder, who continue to work tirelessly to keep our community safe. We must now begin the work of recovery and accountability to ensure that this crisis can never happen again.

UPDATE: The remaining 16,000 residents who have been evacuated because of the Garden Grove hazmat incident may return to their homes effective 7:30 PM PST. There remains an exclusion zone around the facility to allow hazmat teams to continue monitoring the tanks out of an abundance of caution. https://t.co/FzFpshIrSB

UPDATE: I have invited GKN Aerospace leadership to attend my community meeting for residents impacted by the hazmat crisis tomorrow. Our community is rightfully angry and frightened about the chaos and disruption this crisis has caused. GKN must answer directly to the families and small business owners who have been impacted.

Our community is rightfully angry and, now that the threat has been reduced, our work will immediately prioritize demanding accountability from all responsible actors. I’ll continue working with local, state, and federal partners to ensure our residents get the answers and relief they deserve.
UPDATE: I have been briefed by OCFA that the evacuation area has been reduced and 65 percent of evacuees will be able to return home imminently. I encourage everyone to follow the updated guidance and avoid the updated evacuation zone. While there remains an immediate potential risk in that updated zone, the work of the OC Fire Authority is moving in the right direction. I am grateful for the tireless efforts of the OC Fire Authority, local police, and emergency response professionals to mitigate this crisis and keep our community safe.
