Rep. Jamie Raskin

Proudly serving Maryland's beautiful Eighth Congressional District and leading @HouseJudiciary Committee Democrats in Congress.

[Rep. Jamie Raskin @RepRaskin]

Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it. I’m introducing legislation to ensure that the Smithsonian preserves the propaganda tools that the Trump Administration is using to warp and censor American history in the president’s own authoritarian self-image.

My bill will allow future generations to learn about the president who wielded his powers like a tyrant-king and the Americans who fought back for democracy and freedom. https://t.co/a2eVKJXsdQ

Trump said: “When I’m gone, you’re all going to be broke.” Truer words have never been spoken. He has plundered, robbed and bilked the whole country for himself and his family. That’s what disgorgement is all about. Disgorgement—please practice this very fine word.

[Rep. Jamie Raskin @RepRaskin]

In the deepening chaos in the West Bank, the IDF detained several dozen American rabbis and volunteers, including my future Democratic colleague Brad Lander; Mattan Berner-Kadish, who grew up in my district; and at least 31 other American citizens helping Palestinian farmers try to harvest olives in the West Bank under the threat of violence. Meantime, vigilante settlers continue to terrorize Palestinians in the West Bank with scant consequences.

Last week, out-of-control settlers injured an American journalist. Now, the IDF targets volunteers for helping Palestinians harvest olives. The eyes of the world are on the West Bank.

Sending support and solidarity to our Jewish community in Montgomery County and to everyone who is reeling from these disturbing allegations about the antisemitic harassment of a recent graduate of Montgomery Blair High School, where my son Tommy graduated and where he was active in Jewish life and the broader community. No student should ever be targeted, harassed or bullied for their religion, ethnicity or race, or for any reason at all.

[Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari @RepYassAnsari]

.@RepRaskin and I are demanding answers from @AGToddBlanche and @SecRubio about the Trump Administration's decision to intervene both internationally and domestically on the Tate brothers’ behalf — as they face serious criminal charges that include rape and sex trafficking.

I called on Oversight Committee Chairman @RepJamesComer on July 23 to investigate Andrew and Tristan Tate's ties to the Trump Administration, including to Barron Trump. Chairman Comer never responded.

We must remain vigilant and keep pressing the Administration and the Trump family on their efforts to protect the Tate Brothers.

[House Judiciary Dems @HouseJudiciary]

NEW: RM @RepRaskin and @RepYassAnsari demand answers on Trump Administration’s efforts to help Tate brothers evade r*pe and sex trafficking charges as they face extradition to U.K.

East Potomac Park was established more than a century ago by Congress for the recreational leisure of the people: golfers, hikers, bikers, walkers, yoga classes and you name it. Hundreds of thousands of people in the DMV and visitors from elsewhere enjoy this beautiful landmark. Of course, Trump’s now trying to steal it for another imbecilic vanity project so billionaires and Trump’s royal court have another place to golf. They have already illegally demolished hundreds of trees where they want the new course to go. With Halloween approaching, maybe it’s time for a march of the Loraxes to stop this criminal desecration and destruction of federal property. https://t.co/1v6g7KTdJm

Laughing but it’s not funny.

[Rep. Jamie Raskin @RepRaskin]

Gee, what could go wrong with that? That’s like Hitler and Stalin inviting Neville Chamberlain to join them in carving up Europe to “negotiate an end” to the fascist war on the people of Poland, Czechoslovakia, France, England and the rest of the world. Great concept and Donald Trump is clearly the man for the job today! But if there’s no room for Ukraine, NATO or any European country at the table, how about this idea instead: Trump calls off his dirty diesel deal with Putin, which will put billions of dollars into the Russian war machine, he faithfully executes the law by imposing the sanctions on Putin passed overwhelmingly by Congress (which Trump wants to abandon), and then we have an international conference of DEMOCRACIES on how to help Ukraine finally defeat Putin’s fascist, bloodthirsty invasion. Why does our preening gilded-ballroom billionaire autocrat always want to sell us out to Russia, Russia, Russia and the Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party?

[The Wall Street Journal @WSJ]

Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed that he, President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping meet next month to attempt to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine that would favor Moscow, said people familiar with the discussions. https://t.co/F43ytZwD6o

Yesterday, during the No Kings nationwide early voting Day of Action, the group’s Instagram page was taken down for 90 minutes and its administrators were locked out.

@Meta owes the organizers and the American people an explanation of why it silenced No Kings and undermined its Day of Action.

This week’s MD-08 Local Hero is the resourceful Susan Cottle Madden, who is retiring from Montgomery College after more than 20 years serving our County. Susan led the College’s collaborative work and partnerships with local, state and federal governments and worked diligently to help make MC a more affordable and accessible place for our students. https://t.co/NQkfBDO0E6

The reported attack on Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine by West Bank settlers is unconscionable and a moment of reckoning for the world. Are we going to tolerate accelerating vigilante violence against Palestinian civilians and foreign observers by right-wing vigilantes who operate with government protection? Given that Trump lifted President Biden's sanctions on vigilante settlers, we must work to end this chaos and insist upon protection of human rights and the rule of law on the West Bank.

[The Washington Post @washingtonpost]

Dozens of masked Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian villagers trying to gather their autumn olive harvest. Heidi Levine, a veteran photographer for The Post, was also knocked her to the ground, kicked repeatedly and stripped of her camera and phone.

Devastated by another nightmarish act of gun violence taking the lives of children and educators. Sending love and solidarity to the Silver Rail Elementary School community tonight and in the hard days to come. The American people must stand together against the continuing calamity of gun violence if we will ever have hope of overcoming legislative paralysis and acting to institute common-sense gun safety laws.

[Rep. Jamie Raskin @RepRaskin]

Americans are outraged by this planned mass shooting at a Hindu temple in Illinois. We must stand together—and strong—against white supremacist hate and violence targeted at temples, synagogues, churches and mosques. When houses of worship are under attack, all Americans must stand up for freedom and equal rights. Today, my heart is with the Aurora community.

House Democrats work to build a government committed to affordability and progress for all, public accountability and justice and the rule of law.

President Trump and MAGA treat government as an instrument for private self-enrichment, public corruption and extraction of the wealth of the nation to profit a tiny elite.

[Rep. Jamie Raskin @RepRaskin]

While President Trump does everything he can to censor and whitewash American history, we will work to preserve it all, including his own notable part in it. My legislation will make sure we keep and display all of Trump's propaganda signs and banners, document his incorrigible lawlessness and attacks on our Constitution and Bill of Rights, and save all of his gaudy, narcissistic architectural flourishes and monstrosities paid for with the people’s tax dollars in a Smithsonian exhibit devoted to American political authoritarianism.

[Rep. Jamie Raskin @RepRaskin]

Trump’s Homeland Security agents conducted a search of the home of Rep. Ilhan Omar. Like so many Americans, such as James Comey, Letitia James and Davey Hearn, and so many of our Colleagues, like Rep. Maggie Goodlander, Sen. Elissa Slotkin, Sen. Mark Kelly, Rep. Jason Crow, Rep. LaMonica McIver, and others, Rep. Omar is now the victim of legal and political persecution. https://t.co/kf8nttipVA

[House Judiciary Dems @HouseJudiciary]

Just 22 days before the midterm Congressional elections, federal agents shockingly searched the D.C. home of Rep. Ilhan Omar, a sitting Democratic Member of Congress from Minnesota. According to public reporting, DHS’s laughable excuse for this assault on our constitutional values was that they were looking for fraud in immigration paperwork that Rep. Omar’s late father filled out several decades ago, when Rep. Omar was a child and the family came to America as refugees fleeing the civil war in Somalia.

Rep. Omar has been a naturalized American citizen for decades, and her constituents have overwhelmingly elected her to Congress four times. She has now been made the target of a classic Trump political harassment and frame-up operation during the last three weeks of a Congressional election in which President Trump describes himself as being ‘on the ballot.’

Federal agents appear to have searched a sitting congresswoman’s home not to investigate any real crime or threat, but to carry out a campaign of political retribution against one of President Trump’s most outspoken critics. This kind of presidential harassment and persecution of a political critic is exactly why the Framers wrote the Speech or Debate Clause and the First Amendment—to protect Members of Congress and citizens against petty and vindictive reprisal by the Executive branch.

DOJ violated its own policy, which requires the Department to abstain from overt actions in politically-sensitive matters in the 60 days before an election, to conduct this search. This is no accident. Just 22 days before the elections, this is blatant political intimidation and an attempt to interfere with the Congresswoman’s reelection. It is also the culmination of a smear campaign against Minnesota’s Somali American community.

Rep. Omar now joins the ranks of multiple Democratic Members of Congress who have been targeted by Trump’s vindictive Administration on the most outlandish trumped-up charges, including Rep. Maggie Goodlander, Rep. Jason Crow, Rep. Chris Deluzio, Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, Rep. LaMonica McIver, Senator Adam Schiff, Senator Elissa Slotkin, and Senator Mark Kelly. This DOJ routinely harasses Trump’s perceived enemies, including former FBI Director James Comey, New York Attorney General Letitia James and my constituent Davey Hearn, a three-time Olympic canoeist framed on utterly bogus charges for turning our Reflecting Pool into an algae farm, which was actually the handiwork of Trump’s $15 million no-bid pool contractor. In none of these cases has the Administration succeeded in doing anything other than wasting taxpayer resources and forcing citizens to waste their own precious time and money defending themselves against bogus charges.

House Judiciary Committee Democrats stand with Rep. Omar against this outrageous abuse of power, and we will be demanding transparency and accountability as to who authorized this abusive search and who carried it out.

All the world's authoritarians, from Russia and China to North Korea and Belarus, love capital punishment, spectacles of public violence, chaos. Pete Hegseth, fresh from overseeing the USS Lincoln debacle, offers a carnival of state execution.
