@jeffamy Very sorry to read this, Jeff: for you, your family, journalism, and our state. You were fair and diligent, and shared important stories that mattered and informed.
Yesterday, Gov. Kemp cut $2.5 million for homeless veterans, more than $9.4M to address domestic violence & more than $3M for sexual assault victims.
Today, he announces a special session & the state will pay to bring lawmakers back to Atlanta in June.
Where’d he find the $?
Well, here it is.
Our Voting Rights Act town hall tonight could not be more timely.

Show up. Be heard. Fight back.
Let’s just be clear about what happened here.
To fund election year candy in the form of tax cuts on which to campaign, Republicans doomed funding for desperately needed services.
One of many examples: the evisceration of added NOW-COMP waivers for adults with special needs.
The reason: he misjudged his revenue estimate in January & during the appropriations process--which just ended last month.
Among other things, he cut $2.5 million to end veterans homelessness, $9.4 million to address domestic violence, & $3.3 million for sexual assault victims.
“Our state government must follow its own Constitution. This is not optional or discretionary…Our actions set a precedent, and we should all take that very seriously.”

Our state should follow its Constitution.
SB 33 clearly violates a principle that has been the law in Georgia since 1798.
Here is my latest letter to Gov. Kemp outlining, in detail, the bill's many constitutional defects.
“Georgia’s Constitution could not be more clear that all bills for raising revenue must originate in the House of Representatives,” said state @RepScottHolcomb , D-Atlanta. “I look forward to hearing Gov. Kemp’s explanation.”

A remarkable story of perseverance, mercy, justice, and redemption.
Like Mr. Askew I hope @RepScottHolcomb will be able to pass his “Second Look” bill next session, to help others meted disproportionately stringent sentences find their way home.

@JaiahScott@MarchMadnessMBB That is Caleb Wilson from this year’s team. He is an outstanding young man and will likely soon be playing alongside Caleb Love in the NBA.
Annually I host a Post Sine Die Town Hall to do a deep dive on the legislative session.
Here I discuss SB 33, the Republicans’ shambolic, rushed, unconstitutional property tax bill. (With insights from special guest @RepScottHolcomb).

Maybe the Georgia House Republican Majority could focus more on helping real, living Georgians rather than going all-in on protecting Confederate monuments. Thanks @RepScottHolcomb.
