Most Republicans didn't hold town halls this week because they were scared to face their constituents. I wanted to hear from the people I represent. Here are some of the stories shared at my Town Hall:
A father scared of how Republicans’ cuts to Medicaid will hurt his disabled son.
A federal worker who was unjustly fired by DOGE and is now uncertain about her future.
Residents demanding we fight to protect against Trump's harmful actions.

🇺🇸 Happy birthday #America! I had a great time gathering with the community to celebrate #America250 in my hometown @CityofSSF.
This #FourthofJuly we recommit to standing up for our #democracy, and appreciating the diversity upon which our nation is founded 🇺🇸
#IndependenceDay
Happy #ParksandRecreation Month! In May, I visited @presidiosf for a behind-the-scenes look at one of the Bay Area's true gems and a model for public park access. From the Presidio to our local and state parks, these spaces deserve investment—not cuts that put access at risk. As we celebrate the role our outdoor spaces play in bringing communities together this July, I'm committed to ensuring the public lands that connect us remain accessible to all.🏞️🌎
62 years ago the #CivilRightsAct was signed into law, a landmark bill that outlawed segregation and discrimination in public life.
As we mark this anniversary, we recognize that civil rights are facing renewed threats today—from voting restrictions to attacks on key protections—and we must recommit to protecting these liberties that generations fought to secure.
I am disappointed by the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold states’ discriminatory laws banning transgender girls and women from playing on school athletic teams that match their gender identity—a decision that will cause real harm to youth who simply want to be themselves while playing alongside their peers.
Local school leaders and athletic officials are best positioned to make individual determinations about safety and fairness. We shouldn’t have sweeping prohibitions based on fear. States should be focused on breaking down barriers to participation, but instead this decision sends a devastating message to youth who already face discrimination.
While this case is focused on school sports, it leaves the door open to further attacks on transgender rights more broadly. As a proud member of the @EqualityCaucus and a representative of the diverse San Francisco Bay Area, I will continue to fight for the rights and dignity of LGBTQ+ individuals everywhere.

ICYMI: Trump thinks providing affordable housing is a “big yawn” (yes, that’s a direct quote) while continuing to push for his plan to execute a federal takeover of our elections. While he's obsessed with clinging to power, I’m focused on tackling the housing crisis and lowering costs for Americans.
Fatalities from #nitrousoxide misuse have increased by 578% in recent years, and the problem is only worsening. Also known as laughing gas, this dangerous substance is being marketed as a party drug—that's why I'm introducing the bipartisan Nitrous Oxide Safety Act to ban its recreational sale while protecting its legitimate use by medical professionals, restaurants, and industry.

The Supreme Court just reaffirmed one of our most fundamental constitutional principles: That anyone born in the United States is an American citizen. For more than 150 years, the 14th Amendment has guaranteed that birthright citizenship is a constitutional right, not a privilege that can be revoked by a president.
Today’s decision builds on the landmark case of San Francisco native, Wong Kim Ark, the son of Chinese immigrants, whose Supreme Court victory confirmed that birthright citizenship is protected by the Constitution.
Donald Trump's disgraceful and xenophobic attempt to undermine this right was a direct attack on our Constitution.
As we celebrate this decision, I will continue to defend the Constitution against the Administration’s ongoing assault on the freedoms and democratic principles that define
our country.

As we approach the anniversary of Trump's "Big Ugly Bill," the damage is becoming clear. In CA-15 alone, more than 29,000 people are projected to lose their health care, while Republicans use baseless fraud claims to withhold over $1 billion in Medi-Cal funding. @EnergyCommerce
Today, the Supreme Court once again overturned longstanding precedent, this time allowing President Trump to fire leaders of independent federal agencies. Congress deliberately created agencies, such as the Federal Trade Commission, at issue in today’s ruling, to be bipartisan and insulated from political interference.
For 91 years, this structure has ensured presidents could not remove agency leaders for political reasons, enabling them to enforce the law independently and serve the public—not any one administration or party. By dismantling this safeguard, Chief Justice Roberts has replaced Congress’s policy judgment with his own, further weakening the checks and balances in our system and eroding the public’s trust in their government.
This ruling is a shameful usurpation of power – the very kind our Founders sought to address by establishing a new nation 250 years ago.

57 years ago today, the patrons at Stonewall stood up against hate and sparked the beginnings of #Pride.
I'm proud to represent a diverse LGBTQ+ community in the San Francisco Bay Area and to continue working in Congress as a member of the @EqualityCaucus to honor the spirit of Stonewall and the progress we've made in the fight for equality.
What happened to Senator @Scott_Wiener last night was unacceptable. Here in the Bay Area we have a long and proud history of heated protest and passionate disagreement; last night was not that. There is simply no place for hate speech, harassment, and violence - in our politics or elsewhere. No matter your beliefs, no one should be threatened or intimidated for simply showing up for their community. Elected officials and candidates for office do not lose their right to basic human decency.
Senator Wiener’s Statement on Physical Intimidation and Harassment of Political Leaders
SAN FRANCISCO – In two separate incidents this week, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) was harassed, threatened, and physically intimidated while attending public events to engage with the San Francisco community. Both incidents were sparked by people who had previously targeted Senator Wiener with aggressive behavior in the past. Senator Wiener issued the following statement on the incidents:
”Last night I attended the trans march, as I’ve done each year for the past 22 years since the first march in 2004. I attend each year in solidarity with our trans siblings, who are facing existential threats from right wing extremists, including the President. It has been a deep honor to partner for many years with trans people to advance legislation and budget requests to support the community.
”As I walked through Dolores Park to participate in a trans-led Pride Shabbat service in connection with the trans march, a group of people began screaming at me, ran up to me, surrounded me, and began harassing me, both verbally and physically, including physical contact. They made statements about my ‘Israeli handlers,’ among many other inaccurate, extreme, and vile statements. They were so physically and verbally aggressive that it was impossible for me to safely remain in the park. As a result, I left the park and, for the very first time, did not participate in the trans march.
“This follows an incident Wednesday night at a bar in the Mission where I’d gone to watch a World Cup game. During the game, a man accosted me in a corner of the bar, effectively cornering me and the young women staffers who were with me. He screamed abuse at me and our staff before being ejected by the bar’s employees. After being ejected, the man remained outside the bar, shouting my name and pounding on the side of the bar near where I was sitting for several minutes. The same individual, in December 2023, stalked me on a plane and in an airport, shouting at me about my ‘tainted bloodline.’
”I have no objection whatsoever to anyone disagreeing with me, opposing me, or protesting me. All of that is core to democracy. I also have no issue when people talk to me on the street and ask questions or express opposition. That’s democracy, even when the people engaging in this conduct misrepresent my views.
“But when opposition and disagreement transition to harassment, including cornering me, touching me, or trying to physically bully me out of a public event, that crosses a line. We’re living in a time when violence is all too often threatened or used against people in public life. In San Francisco, we’re better than that.”
It was great to welcome SF 10th grader Frank Ouyang to DC this week as the winner of this year’s #CongressionalArtCompetition! His incredible piece, The Sound of Freedom, celebrates the power of jazz and our district’s rich musical history, and is now on display in the U.S. Capitol.

On the anniversary of Obergefell v. Hodges, we celebrate the fight for marriage equality nationwide and remember the advocates whose courage helped secure equal rights for all Americans. I will continue working with the @EqualityCaucus to defend the rights and dignity of LGBTQI+ Americans everywhere.
Trump just cancelled the signing of a bill that would make housing more affordable because he would rather see Americans homeless on the street than exercising their constitutional right at the ballot box.
Methane is responsible for nearly 30% of the rise in global temperatures and cutting down on emissions is not enough—that's why I introduced a bill with @RepSalinas and @RepCarolMiller to accelerate the removal of existing methane emissions to meet the urgency of the climate crisis.
