@jessphillips 2/2 If private schools should lose their VAT exemption what about thousands of other charities? Or is it political expediency to ‘tackle’ private schools. Was Head of a school in Liverpool, miles removed from stereotypical views of Eton or Harrow. This will harm local kids
@jessphillips 1/2 I think it’s 18% for 6th form but in some specialist subjects such as Physics at A level, much higher. No problem political parties deciding spending priorities … but what a shame we don’t think most private schools as charities provide a public benefit.
So impressed with the way the whole school community and the Family of Repton schools in the UAE @ReptonAlBarsha @ReptonAbuDhabi and @ReptonDubai have overcome the challenges of the last few years, and are determined to deliver a world class education to our pupils.

@RachelReevesMP 2/2 After expensive Officer training at Sandhurst, we all had to serve a minimum of 3 years in the army, to help pay back cost of our training. Wouldn’t this same principle in NHS help with retention of staff?
@RachelReevesMP 1/2 Dear Rachel, has the LP considered insisting / mandating that trainee doctors have to spend 3-5 years in NHS after qualifying, as the state has paid for their v expensive training?
Our @ReptonDubai Duke of Edinburgh students have been trekking through some of the most beautiful terrain in Thailand this week. A simply stunning setting for them to complete their expedition. #dukeofedinburghaward
Our @ReptonDubai sixth form students have had an eventful week in Thailand. They have been building a new nursery in our partner school, teaching their students English and even managed to throw in a cookery class. #internationalbaccalaureate
So excited to finally share this. It’s been a huge effort by the whole team. Big shout out to @JordanSingleton who hasn’t been driven insane by me… yet
@tomhfh Thanks for highlighting this issue. With over 400,000 charities in UK, why does Labour (always) focus on private schools? Why not Royal Opera House, British Museum, or Church Commissioners etc? All have to prove public benefit. Which charities will next be targeted?
2/2 Does Labour intend to remove the tax exemption from all (100,000s) UK charities or only private schools? If only from private schools, why? Easy political points to own base? Which charities will next be targeted?
NEW: asked if Labour impose taxes on school fees gradually, rather than in the middle of a child’s schooling to avoid thousands of middle class children having to leave their schools, Sir Keir’s spox says:
“I don’t accept the premise of your question.”
1/1 Organizations organized and operated exclusively for religious, charitable, scientific, testing for public safety, literary, educational, or other specified purposes and that meet certain other requirements are tax exempt under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)
