The jump from the ferry is one of the most iconic happenings in Triathlons around the world. Why do we spray all athletes with ice-cold seawater before we let them make the famous jump at Norseman? https://t.co/NhHMgWVzv9

That was all from the Norseman Research Team this evening. Hope you enjoyed it! Please do not hesitate to contact us if any questions. @jmelau#norsemanscience
The team has also compared biomarkers from Norseman to an Olympic distance triathlon. Huge differences. Olympic distance shows small changes compared to Norseman. #norsemanscience
After the race, there are systematic and statistically relevant changes to several blood samples. Some of them are normally a sign of pathology. As an example - Creatine Kinase (CK) is elevated to 2450 on average (should be below 400) #norsemanscience
Last lecture today, is very interesting! The research team has measured biomarkers before and after the race. Medical Doctor Christoffer is presenting the study. https://t.co/fqAaCDyKIf #norsemanscience
There was a large and statistically significant reduction in Choline levels in both races, with the longer races being associated with a larger decrease. The krill oil group showed significantly higher values. #norsemanscience
The study gave 5 weeks pre-race of supplementation of krill oil (or placebo) to a total of 47 athletes at Norseman. Then Choline levels were measured pre-race, at the finish line and 24 hours after race. The same was done at a Olympic distance race @oslotriathlon#norsemanscience
Choline is present in several processes on the human body. Coline is a precursor to acetylcholine, which stimulate muscular contractions. In long-distance races, studies have shown that Choline levels are depleted. #norsemanscience
Krill oil is more than an Omega-3 supplement. An advantage of the krill oil supplement in @superba_krill is that it contains Choline. In this present study, the researchers from @akerbiomarine wanted to focus more on choline #norsemanscience
@Akerbiomarine has been doing research as a part of the Norseman Research Team for a few years now, focusing on the effect of Krill Oil. Aker Biomarine is a company that develope and manufacture krill oil supplements. @superba_krill#norsemanscience
Results: All 5 study subjects were swimming faster with a wetsuit. No change in stroke rate. No change in average core temperature. And - no difference in core temperature with or without a wetsuit. #norsemanscience
Next up is Andreas Storsve. He is a researcher and Director of A&D at @akerbiomarine He is going to talk about this study - Effect of krill oil supplements in triathletes https://t.co/J3ZG9MdEGp #norsemanscience
If you want to know more about exercise in the heat, Thijs reccomend downloading the “Beat the heat” compendium from @worldtriathlon https://t.co/A974M1cW4X

3. Apply cooling strategies. Pre-cooling before the race. Per-cooling during the race. Post-cooling after the race. Studies show that if you cool yourself, you can improve your performance in the heat. #norsemanscience
2. Measure or check heat stress levels. Thijs explain the use of Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT). This measurement account for radiant heat, ambient temperature, humidity and airflow. #norsemanscience#sciencegeek#temperaturephysiology
