Postgrad funding in SA is a national crisis: NRF’s postgrad budget has roughly halved since 2017, while NSFAS dwarfs it for undergrads.

More honours grads each year and the fiercer entry‑level job competition (Incl internships) = postgrad qualifications are now essential.

We need new, scalable ways to fund our students.

A new sector‑wide bursary toolkit from IPASA aims to help donors design better postgrad support.

We have identified three Nigerian universities for our first research project. These universities are:

1. University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)
2. University of Ibadan (UI)
3. Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (ABU)

These universities were carefully selected based on their antecedents, geographical locations, and the quality of research work in our area of interest.

The project is designed to recruit and fund at least three Ph.D. positions from each university.

We will make this one of the most impactful education research projects in Nigeria.

We find this project critical to the future of education in Nigeria, and I will try to carry everyone along on the journey.

South Africa cannot afford to plan higher education in the dark. DHET’s admission that it cannot track which qualifications lead to graduate unemployment exposes a major gap between university funding, curriculum planning and labour-market demand.
The National Graduate Destination Study is a necessary step but it must produce trusted, privacy-protecting evidence that helps universities, government and industry align programmes with real opportunities for graduates.
