GETTING STARTED: Young people with incarcerated loved ones, formerly incarcerated community leaders, NAACP of NYS, Lawmakers from all across the state are rallying in the State Capitol to say 2025 must be the year for Parole Justice!
Good morning from #NARSOL2024 Attorney @KimBuddin, Sr. Policy Counsel at @ACLU presents “The Rise and a Fall of the Registry” Watch #NARSOL2024 LIVE ➡️ https://t.co/jrCNi94LSi
🧵Today, we honor all of the fathers & children separated but cages across New York. We see you. We love you. In this thread, we share stories from currently incarcerated dads who are fighting racist & unjust sentencing laws with #CommunitiesNotCages.
Listen to MG bravely share his experiences as it pertains to SARA - a counterproductive banishment law - on the @NYCLU podcast, along with RAF board member and sociologist @HorowitzEmily
The state should not be legislating anyone into homelessness
LISTEN: SARA is billed as a way to protect New Yorkers from people who could harm children.
But research shows these types of geographical restrictions don’t increase public safety.

If you’re not on Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous, having a record can disrupt your life, career, and family. And that’s worth talking about.
This thoughtful piece from @prisonpolicy can help us all in speaking on recent news.
“The idea that, in the name of survivors, we would be mutilating people’s bodies is an affront to people who have survived sexual violence,” said @amberspeaksup, executive director of @RestoreAlliance - This Louisiana bill is barbaric & counterproductive.

With NY's legislative session ending, time is running out and we need #ParoleJusticeNY. Our loved ones cannot wait another year and languish behind bars. We need you @CarlHeastie & @AndreaSCousins, help us save lives and reunite families. Pass Elder Parole & Fair & Timely Parole.
We applaud @NYCLU and their brave plaintiffs for this litigation to overturn an unfair practice that destabilizes people in reentry. Policies like SARA that prioritize perpetual punishment over prevention practices, rehabilitation & survivor services are counterproductive.
4/ Banishment is not how we should treat formerly incarcerated individuals.
The Constitution requires that people convicted of sexual offenses are not subjected to unnecessary and vague restrictions that curb their ability to reintegrate into society.
Our statement:
TAKE ACTION: This is the year for #ParoleJusticeNY! A majority of NY State lawmakers support two bills to end permanent punishment, reunite families, & improve safety for all. Urge them to pass the bills now! https://t.co/GPcTS0INFm
This month’s episode of #amplifiedvoices sponsored by @RestoreAlliance features Mingo. He received clemency in 2021 after 40 yrs & has always worked tirelessly to help others. Listen on your fav podcast app or at https://t.co/tJC7qsp2PF
Humans grow & change. We stand with the @RAPPcampaign and others to end the culture of exclusion in reform efforts. All people should have access to real relief from system injustices & the opportunity to be part of community solutions.
This week we were at Cardozo Law School talking about building a human justice movement without exclusions, led by 9 formerly incarcerated leaders who served 268 years. All do incredible work improving safety. All were excluded from NY's Clean Slate & many other reforms. (1/x)
We want to live in a world where preventing, healing and transforming serious harm are prioritized above vengeance, where people's varied accomplishments are valued, and where permanent punishment goes extinct.
Where no one is excluded.
THREAD. Across the U.S., hundreds of thousands of children have been banned from visiting their parents who are awaiting trial in local jails. Why? A conspiracy to make money. We just filed two landmark civil rights lawsuits to stop it, but the story is unbelievable.
If you missed the “Sex Exceptionalism in Culture & Law” panel yesterday, you can watch a recording here: https://t.co/oJdreJwGzL We were so pleased to have over 150 in attendance!
Thank you to @HorowitzEmily @UnCagedCritique @ayagruber & @ASRAdvocates for a great conversation.
Our Public Policy and Advocacy Team gained huge legislative wins last year. One of their biggest victories, protecting children from police deception tactics, was with the help of the Innocence Project. To our friends at the Innocence Project, thank you. https://t.co/BxkBZ5vuXG
Safety is up to all of us! “This idea that landlords are at odds with people living with a record is just silliness… We all have a stake in the safety of our communities and our communities are safer when everyone has fair access to housing.” - @amberspeaksup
