In 2015, ISIS captured Palmyra and demanded its head of antiquities reveal where the treasures were hidden.
He was 81 years old. He refused.
Khaled al-Asaad had spent over 50 years excavating and protecting Palmyra, the caravan city that once rivalled Rome in the Syrian desert.
He learned Aramaic to read its inscriptions. He raised his children among its ruins and named his daughter Zenobia, after its rebel queen.
Before the city fell, he helped evacuate hundreds of artefacts to safety. ISIS interrogated him for weeks to find them. But he gave them nothing.
They executed him in the square and left his body among the columns he had spent his life defending.
Archaeology is not a soft profession. Sometimes the people who guard the past die for it.
some scholars are scared what their colleagues will do to their career prospects so they lie about their true beliefs. Khaled al-Asaad refused to hand over the location of artifacts to ISIS; so they executed him. now that's a real scholar there...
Right, because married people are spending almost all their free time raising the children who make up the next generation of society while the single people larp for an hour at the soup kitchen

Go on Indeed and search for entry level welding jobs. The listings are sparse and the starting pay is about the same as a job chopping fries at In-N-Out.
Something is not adding up with this narrative.
The entire manufacturing industry is basically, "Needed: highly skilled worker for (X), must already be certified with 3-5 years experience in (X, Y, Z). Must own tools. No training will be provided. 10-20 hours mandatory OT per week. Pays less than entry level McDonald's"
It is genuinely crazy to me how having people fall in love with you is just a universal experience for women
Meanwhile as a man you can spend your entire life self-improving just to never get noticed
Boomers all considered themselves competent DIYers because the quality expectations were comically low, everyone who has shopped for a fixer upper house has seen some stuff that's considered heinous malpractice by today's DIYers
I feel qualified to chime in here.
Being middle class is a relatively new thing for most of the developing world. A table full of food feels luxurious to the Thai, the Turk, the Arab, the Indian, in a way westerners don’t quite grasp. Hunger is too far distant from our psyche.
I look at a table like this and I see gluttony and waste. The Turk feels content with the feast laid out before him. The table laden with food represents success to him in the same way westerners view a well manicured lawn or a decent wine collection. They are still at the safety stage of industrialization. Westerners want self-actualization.
Unironically haaland has the potential to completely change soccer and inspire the future generation to stop the flopping and just play the game like men
