The bulk of fans complaints about referee decisions are in 2 forms, lack of consistency, and overbearing use of VAR in trifling situations. The solution, get rid of VAR and accept the human frailties of players and referees. Controversy always balances out and VAR destroys to moment and enjoyment.
Nonsense. Referees call the game as seen and time left to play should have zero impact on a decision. As an example, and I am a referee, players believe that they get a freebee tackle early in the game and that a Red card in a final is highly unlikely and a offence needs to be more severe than a group or league game. They also believe that a second yellow is more severe as it leads to a sending off, so they make silly fouls, believing they are protected. Brave referees know all of this and call exactly what they see, when they see it. Weak referees bow to game pressure. This referee did the right thing and spent a lot of time looking at the VAR replays.
