Suvarnamukhi River – The Sacred Forest Stream of Bannerghatta.
Deep within the Vahnigiri (Suvarnamukhi Hills) range, in and around Bannerghatta National Park near Bengaluru, Karnataka, originates the beautiful seasonal Suvarnamukhi River. This pristine forest stream winds through the hills, nourishes the ancient Suvarnamukhi Kalyani, and further downstream cascades as the scenic Thottikallu Falls (TK Falls), also known as Swarnamukhi Falls. It is a tributary of the Arkavati River.
Why “Suvarnamukhi” (Golden-Faced)?
According to local lore and ancient tradition:
Emperor Janamejaya (great-grandson of the Pandavas) performed the Sarpa Yaga to avenge his father Parikshit’s death by snakebite. This triggered severe sarpa dosha skin ailments and immense suffering.
He bathed in these sacred waters and was miraculously cured. His body acquired a radiant golden glow (Suvarna = gold, Mukhi = face). Hence, the river, pond, and falls were named Suvarnamukhi. The waters are believed to shimmer with a golden hue at sunrise and sunset.
Tale of Gold Particles:
Local folklore and oral traditions hold that the river’s water and sand once contained fine gold particles. Because of this, it was also affectionately called “Chinnada Hole” (Golden Stream). Historians suggest that the mineral-rich rocks of the region may have released tiny specks of gold into the flowing water in ancient times.
Prehistoric Significance:
The Suvarnamukhi and Bannerghatta region bear witness to ancient human activity dating back thousands of years. Prehistoric megalithic structures such as dolmens, stone circles, and rare labyrinths (seven-circuit stone mazes) have been discovered here. These date to the Neolithic and Megalithic periods, offering compelling evidence of human habitation nearly 7,000 years ago.
Suvarnamukhi Kalyani – The Ancient Stepped Pond
The river fills this historic stepped tank (Kalyani/Pushkarini), renowned for its medicinal and curative properties, especially in healing skin diseases.
At the base lies a unique rock-carved idol of Lord Anjaneya (Hanuman) engraved directly into the stone floor. Once a year (usually around Hanuma Jayanti), the pond is drained, allowing devotees to offer special worship to this powerful, swayambhu-like carving.
Thottikallu Falls (TK Falls / Swarnamukhi Falls)
Further downstream, the Suvarnamukhi River plunges as Thottikallu Falls a breathtaking seasonal waterfall that reaches its full glory after the monsoon (October–December). Surrounded by rocky terrain and lush greenery, it is a favourite destination for trekkers and nature enthusiasts. A small shrine dedicated to Muneeshwara Swamy stands nearby. The site is popular for trekking and (with caution) swimming, though visitors must obtain permission from the Forest Department.
Nearby Attractions
• Sri Champakadhama Swamy Temple (believed to have been consecrated by Emperor Janamejaya)
• Shrines of Ambha Bhavani, Bhavani Shankara, and Lakshmi Narasimha
• Timeless tales connected to the Pandavas and the Dandakaranya forest of the Ramayana
A short forest trek (1.5 - 4 km) from the temples leads to the Kalyani and the falls an ideal trail for spiritual seekers, nature lovers, and birdwatchers. Important Note: Always check with the Forest Department before visiting TK Falls, as access may be restricted for safety and conservation reasons (elephant corridor).
A perfect blend of faith, history, prehistoric heritage, nature, and adventure! Let us protect this sacred river, its Kalyani, and the pristine falls. 💧🛕🙏

Yes, it’s a team sport. And this is a team victory.
But every championship has a story that comes to define it.
This one belongs, in no small measure, to this man.
Because of his Loyalty, Commitment, Belief.
He stayed the course through years of near misses and disappointment.
His faith was rewarded.
Inspiring, whatever your profession.
